So I got a chance to play with the new codex today. I was cautionary optimistic before but I have to say with all the doom in gloom I was not only pleased with how the new codex works but pleasantly suspired as it surpassed my expectations over all. I found it to be much more effective than last edition.

I see this codex as perfectly viable in 6th edition. It is not a "Fire and forget" codex. You have to choose you model combinations and tactics carefully and they require a bit of skill be successful. But I would say there are more viable models to choose from than before and the army has more viable builds then before.

As far as criticisms go I would have liked to have seem more uniquely Tyranid rules and I wish my beloved genestealer would have been given a little boost and the loss of spores is very disappointing. Also I fully acknowledge that there are some nonplayeble units in the codex and some of the most popular builds of 5th edition cannot be done, or are not as effective now. But on the whole I see the codex as stronger and more flexible then 5th edition.

I see a lot of rah rah happy happy in your posts, but not hard facts... we've been pouring over the codex for a couple of days now. Doing the math and realizing how much we've lost and how little has been gained. Sure there are builds that will still be successful, but again you're pidgeon holed into those builds if you want to be successful. Last dex it was flyrants and tervis. This dex it's looking like it might have to be a spam flying circus. Point is, the dex was not well thought out/tested, or they just didn't care.

You're not telling us how many points, what armies you played against. Honestly without any data, I'm finding it hard to care what you think of the new codex. Not trying to be an ass, but basically all you're giving us is an opinion.. Opinions are like ***holes, everyone has got one and they all stink.

i have to agree with some of the others so far. it seems more like a counter-flame topic.. "eveyone hate sthe dex so im gonna defend it!"
give us some details! what did you find so successfull? why did you prefre this dex over the old one? what units did you actually end up using? if you just threw 500 points of gaunts at a few marines for an hour or two, then you havent really tried the new dex out yet, and have a good idea of the changes yet..

First of all I just had a lot of fun with it. I have not enjoyed 40k this much in a while. I think my 3 favorite things have been cheap hormagaunts, Crones, and the Exocrine. I never liked using Tervigons in last edition. So it was nice to feel like there was not a gapping hole in my army because of that. Last editions I had 3 big problems:

1. I could not reach and hold objective

Solved by cheap and fast hormagaunts (I as averaging about 12 inches a turn with running)

2. I struggled to kill skimmers

Solved by Crones and Flyrants which mean they can run but they cant hide. I could catch them between the hammer of my flyers and the anvil of my walking MC. Also the exocrine is a surprisingly good (not great but good) anti tank unit.

3. Could not kill flyers.

Solved by Crones and I was lucky because my Flyrant kept getting warp lance. Also oddly enough the exocrine is a surprisingly good anti air unit.

Last but not least I love poison with boneswords. My opponent learned to keep his Wraithknights very far from my hive tyrant.

Played only against Eldar switched the lists around on both sides a bit but it was a 2000 point games Mine was generally:

Bonesword flyrant

2 Zoans

about 500 points of Hormagaunts (naked)

2 crones

1 Harpy

1 Exocrine

Tryon prime.

The rest of the army varied from game to game but those were the basics the rest was swapping out different MC and Hive guard amounts.


My friends list revolved around

A farseer

3-4 Wave serpents with guardians

A mix of the different heavy tanks but usually at least one prism and the some artillery blast tank (forget what it is called..

1 or 2 of the fighters

A Warithloard

Again the rest of this army rotated difernt stuff but these showed up in most games


As for what is more effective I address that in a different post.

Don't mean to argumentative. I thought that people would be more relieved that upset that the codex works better than we thought it might. I go into the some of the other details in other post. Don't claim to know the new codex in side and out and maybe as the people I play develop counters things will get harder. But the initial games were good.

You experience may have been enjoyable for you, and you may have been successful, but your experience playing against a single army for a single day (and presumably against a single opponent), is not worth much for determining the strength of the codex. In fact, it's worth next to nothing, and certainly doesn't tell people if the codex is better on the table than on paper. In this case, the number crunching is genuinely a much more useful tool for evaluating the codex.

I do encourage you to continue playing varying point levels against different armies and players and documenting those encounters. We'd like to accumulate actual play testing data that we don't believe GW took the time to do.

I really am a bit puzzle by the push back on this. If figured after months of rumors and a week of hand wringing people would want to hear a first hand account. Of course not everyone experience will mirror mine and I can't say what the final verdict will be on it by the larger gaming community and I am certainly not going to try to change anyone's mind that is already made up. But as for myself I am happy about the codex and look forward to playing it more.
