I am working on a rather in depth fluff piece for my hive fleet. To make part of the fluff more thematic and fitting I had to design a new Tyranid organism the Hrimfaxi.
The Hrimfaxi is a mutation created from the same genetic strain as the Narval. They are similar in appearance and size with a few exceptions. Instead of a single line of spine clusters like Narval uses to help the fleet move is space, the Hrimfaxi has a number of tentacles surrounding its mouth that allow them to manipulate the gravity fields of objects around them. The number of tentacles each Hrimfaxi has depends on the age and size of the subject as does the strength of the gravitational forces it can exert.
Singularly a Hrimfaxi will exert this power at an asteroid field to push small asteroids out of their orbits, primarily to have it enter a planets atmosphere around the same time as a mycetic spore assaults on planetoids. While this is a boon to the invasion forces it pales in comparison to what a school of Hrimfaxi is capable of. When a school of Hrimfaxi all focus their abilities on the same target they can turn its own gravity back in on itself making them capable of blowing apart a planet or moon section by section. This ability, however, requires an amount of time and coordination that the stress of battle rarely allows for and is usually reserved for after the planet has been stripped of biomass.
Hive Fleets utilizing Hrimfaxi are known for leaving nothing of a planet behind but a debris field where it used to be as even some of the solidifying metal cores of planets are claimed, by the Hrimfaxi themselves, and taken along with the hive fleet. The Hrimfaxi do this for 2 reasons. First they digest the metals therein to secrete hardened shells which they shed and replace rapidly as they grow. And secondly as a solution for worlds that would require too much biomass investment to be taken by force. In these cases the Hrimfaxi (That normally sit back in an asteroid field as earlier mentioned) will detach from the metal core of a planet they have consumed in the past and, working as a school, thrust the planetoid into a collision course with the targeted world.
Diverting the oncoming apocalypse is the only hope to save the world from cataclysmic destruction and even that can only be obtained by Herculean efforts and staggering amounts of ordinance that even if successful leaves the planet severely weakened and ripe for the picking by the next wave of the tyranid assault. If the planetary defense force fails to deflect the planetoid it all but destroys the planet and the fleet picks through the remains.
