N00b-ish question about the Flyrant.

If I take wings on a Hive Tyrant, the actual wings model takes up the top arm slots on the Tyrant. Can he still be equipped with, say, 2 sets of Scything Talons (or 2 twin-linked Devourers, or Lash-Whip/BoneSword and Stranglethorn Cannon, or any other combo of two weapon sets), even though the model doesn't reflect this?

I'm a big stickler for making my models look exactly as they're presented on my army list, so this is kinda bugging me.

What you're doing is fine.  He CAN have two sets of weapons and wings - that is very clear in the codex.  For example, my Flying Hive Tyrants' arm sockets physically have one set of wings and ONE set of devourers.  However, I count him as having wings and TWO sets of devourers when I play because you ARE allowed to do that.  I wish GW had put the wings on his back so we could use both arms slots and accurately represent his weapons for true WYSIWYG.  I agree with you - this bugs me too!

If someone hassles you about WYSIWYG, just explain the situation.  Because of how GW made the new model, you cannot do WYSIWYG.  And show them in the codex that it does allow the set up you are playing (wings and 2 weapon sets).  Most of the experienced players are already aware of this situation and other similar ones and won't give you any trouble about it. 

But you may occassionally run into one rare person who really has a problem with it.  In those types of situations, recognize that's probably just the beginning of the problems you're about to have while playing a game with that person.  So I'd recommend stopping right there and finding someone else to play who's  less likely to be jerk and not fun to play with.  This is a hard lesson I learned from personal experience unfortunately.

There are conversions out there trying to get around this issue including using the leg spots, gluing options to the thumbs of the wings, glueing the wings to the back of the model to free up the arm slots while others covert custom weapons to represent the options with just two slots (e.g. having devours and bonesword laship by having a bonesword in one arm and devour in the other or glueing a fleshborer hive on to represent two sets of twin linked guns). Also, it depends how WYSIWYG your area is, if they're fast and loose than glue whatever you want on there.

Actually, it isn't even an option. You *have* to take two sets of weapon biomorphs, and the wings are in addition to that. If you only take (for example) wings and one set of TLDev.... then you are breaking the rules.

yeah, GW doesnt make much sense in this regard. there are cetain rules to tyranid anatomy, and the main one is all tyranids have 6 limbs! no more, no less! so wings legs AND 2x weapons makes no sense unless you convert the weapons (ex. cut claws off crushing claw arms, and green stuff 2 devourer cones to each)

I'm guessing GW's reason for it is that they're expecting players to have a melee weapon of some kind on the Flyrant. Thus the leg claws and/or the wings are there to represent Rending Claws/Scything Talons. Least that's the only reason I can think of it. You get the same problem with the FW Shrike upgrade parts, but at least those look like actually scything talons are built into the wing structure.

Well, the flyrant version of the model has Scy Tals as feet.

I personally agree with the OP, I too like to stick to the tyranids have only 6 limbs (3 pairs) aspect so I did this for my flyrant




I count each arm as being a whole set of twin linked devourers, so 2 arms = 2 sets of twin linked

I think the flying legs are supposed to represent scything so I drilled the leg mounts into sockets and magnetized them to fit arms better.

iyama. That is EXACTLY what i was thinking for 2x TL devourers. Looks way better than the GW official pieces for them. I plan on making a flyrant usng a carnifex torso and the leftover pieces from when i made my footrant. The carnifex body is longer than the hive tyrant's, so that on the long tail should give a look of a massive winged serpent. Kind of like a stockier harpy. I'll post pics when i make it. Just gotaa get a torso off ebay and some green stuff...

I magnetized the legs on my first flyrant but every pair of arms I try to put there end up looking really stupid. I ended up just going with modded twin linked devourer arms as previously mentioned where each arm is one twin linked pair.

I've made alot of those devourer pincer looking arms out of crushing claws for my carnifexes and shell tyrant with the rear arm serving as an ammo feeder tube to the claw. This is more for a lack of devourer arms, not a fan of using fleshborer hives or other proxies. They look too bulky for the flyrant, like he's dragging the stuff around, sacrifing mobility for firepower. The devourer arms in the leg sockets look more frail and lightweight, this fits the image of an agile flyrant IMO. Ill put a picture on this thread in a bit.
