This just something I threw together quick and its pretty rough around the edges at the moment (and I mean rough!) but I think its a good start. I'd love to hear what you think and how it may for improved or tailored into the 40k fluff better. There are likely several inaccuracies between it and the actual 40k fluff.
-------
Overview:
Hive Fleet Midgard is an only-discovered fleet. Midgard has only been observed within the vicinity of the planet Fenris. Midgard was originally believed to be a recent splinter off of one of the major fleets but this was soon discredited by several factors.
Color Traits:
The first and most obvious problem with this theory is the coloration of Midgard. Midgard tyranids feature a dark blue, almost black carapace and a very pale blue or grey skin. This is a sharp contrast to the most likely parent fleet, Leviathan.
Location:
The location of the fleet raises other issues with the theory. Leviathan is the only existing fleet that is likely to be the parent of Midgard; the issue being that Leviathan has not expanded past Segmentum Tempestus, light-years away from the sightings of Midgard. There are several eradicated fleets that were known to exist within the area, but they all well predate the sightings of Midgard.
Flawed Theories:
There are numerous members of the Magos Biologis that stubbornly adhere to the idea that Midgard is of Leviathan origins because “no other theory provides logical evidence or reasonable probability.” Some of the more ambitious members are willing to offer the possibility that Midgard is descended from Hive Fleet Ouroboros. This would indicate that the fleet would have branched off of the parent fleet around M36, and remained dormant for almost 6 thousand years within the reach of the Imperium and avoided detection. This is a feat that can rarely be enacted by a highly developed civilization, making it nearly impossible for the splinter of an eradicated hive fleet and hence this theory is usually discredited. There are various theories; all having numerous logic-gaps or provide a probability that is more than negligible. There is, however, one theory that stands out. This remaining theory is sound, has strong evidence in its favor, and has yet to face a coherent argument against it.
The “Fossil Theory:”
The most controversial theory is that Midgard is one of, if not the first Hive Fleet to ever reach the galaxy. Their coloration and location as well as their sudden appearance with no discernible parent fleet would imply that they have been dormant within the system for quite some time. It is estimated that they date back to far before M30. Those who support this theory believe that Midgard is native to Fenris itself or, more specifically, its oceans. The age of the fleet would allow this, as they would have arrived at the planet not only before the Imperium was familiar with the signs of a hive fleet (namely disruption of warp communication and travel, as before M30 and the Emperor, the Warp was not utilized by humans), but before the primarch of the Space Wolves civilized the planet. It is believed that the Krakens of Fenris are either an unknown strain of Tyranid that is not in synapse or, more frighteningly, a retrieval method for the hidden Tyranids to obtain biomass. The theory has yet to be confirmed; however, credible evidence has not yet been found to deny this theory.
