SO since they are snipers I figured a nice dusted coat to match the random terrain I created that looks great as dirt or sand. Now I do a brown, then drybrush dheneb stone, then drybrush flat flesh, then drybrush bleached bone.

1. Does the coat scheme match/work with the terrain?
2. I was thinking addeptus battlegrey or a grey for the normal clothes.
3. Should I change the ammo packs to grey as well and do a black or mud wash?
4. Any random ideas you may have?




Decided be easier to just have a daily thread to post in then create anymore.

New idea for the flesh of the widowmaker, and I applied devlan mud to the areas matching the terrain, dear god it looks beautiful!

so what I did to the coat I did to the flesh as a drybrush to add a dirt affect after the flesh wash.

Also unsure if I should leave my Mannikin drybrushed or apply a wash so I did both and took pics. I need to strip and reprime anyway because of the contest but also because I am getting super fine grit in.

On the guy holding the rifle.. it would look cool if you could make him look like he was wearing his goggles all day and just put them up on his head... Do you know what I mean? His whole face would be dirty except where his goggles were! Just a thought...

I could try. Never though of that. Thankfully this is a test model so I can afford to try that.

Overall I really think that the wash over the models makes them look awesome! That's usually what washes do though I normally apply a wash to the basecoat before I highlight or drybrush, but your way of doing it seems to be working. If you're at all concerned that the contrast between the highlights and the shadows isn't strong enough, you can always just do an extra dry dry brush over the edges of the models, but I think they look pretty good as is.

I'm not quite sure what effect you're going for with the sniper... do you want him to look caked in sand? Or do you just want it to look like he picked out an outfit that matches the sand? If the former, you may want to do some drybrushing of the sand/coat colour over parts of the gun, his boots, hair and those elbow patches, just light enough that it looks like sand is clinging to him, if the latter, you're doing the affect well.

I'm not too good with skin tones and facts, but I always leave the eyes black. I find that trying to add a pupil and an iris only serves to make the model look like it's on drugs, or it's staring in two different directions. I hate to say it, but he looks like his eyes are blood shot, and it really distracts from the model.

If you want to go for sand-coated skin, I'd apply the flesh tones first (whether you want to layer or use a wash) and then lightly drybrush/dry dab the sand colour onto parts of his face. When I did the Caucasian skintone on my marines I went the hard route and use Dark Flesh, Dwarf Elf and then Elf Flesh in layers, leaving the eyes black and making the teeth white. Later on when I got some IG Tank Crew models I was lazy and I just used Dwarf Flesh with an Ogryn Flesh wash. If I was doing skin now, I'd probably do a Dwarf Flesh layer, a wash (either Ogryn, Sepia, Devlin or maybe even a watered down Dark Flesh) and then rehighlight with Dwarf, and then some Elf flesh on the edges.

If you want I could show you some images of the Marine heads and the IG bodies I did, but I don't want to post them here in your personal painting thread without permission. I don't want to come off as hijacking or showing off!

I aimed for making him blend in with the sand. I was thinking the gun being dusted as well, but what other colors to have it, what to base it. I don't want to have the model overdone with the dust. But I may say screw it and just gillie suit him up.

I understand the thing with the eyes but that's the ogryn flesh wash on his skin. Still he is in sand...or dirt so some may have gotten in his eye. (just looked at him, its a lighting/angle issue). If you look at him with the light straight on his face it looks like skin. Ill take a pic of that later.

I figured I would do all the basic colors first, skin, goggles, brown base. Then do all the drybrushing, then add the washes. And if something doesn't look good with the sanded affect ill paint over it.

Also trying to avoid buying more paint lol

The best way to get an effect right when you don't know how is to look up tutorials AND look for real life images of the effect you want. See if you can find some images of soldiers with guns in sand areas on google, study where the sand clings to on the gun and try to mimic that.

It works, its more brown for some reason....maybe too much mud, but it shall be fine on the final scheme. If you green light the gun I shall start stripping my models so I can rebase them with super fine grit.

That effect is really coming along... I like it! Are you planning on doing a whole army like that or just a squad or two?

Oh by the way, I saw the new glazes on armor for a Fantasy model over the weekend (some kind of mounted warrior on a magical beast) and they really made the armor pop/look realistic. There was gold, bronze and silver armor on the Character and His mount..

Just for the Widowmakers. But Will definitely try this wither other dusted models in the future.

Glazes give an aura effect. Not looking for that on my mini but will use the blue on a friends mini since his armor and weapon are "enchanted" in the D&D game.

Glazes are like a wash/shade only it doesn't sink into the recesses, it floats over the whole model and tints it's colour. You can use them on metal or white to give it colour, or add it over the same coloured paint job to enhance the colours (red glaze over red paint for example), or you could add a glaze to another colour paint job for a different effect (I used a green glaze and shade combo over a yellow ork model for a greenish ork with some yellowy highlights to him, it was very cool).

Hmm, I personally think you went a bit overboard with the gun, it now looks like the gun is the same colour as the coat, as opposed to a black gun with sand on it. But if thats the effect you like/want to go for, go for it.

It went a little heavy yes, but google camo guns and it matches the camo uniforms so.....does work.

Just got my glaze, flock and grit! One question. Why is it that when I paint my based mini that the grit will fly off when I am drybrushing it? Only when I glue it does it do this, if someone else does its fine...

How are you applying the grit? PVA applied to the base then sprinkle sand on it? I get a little bit coming off, but not much and it still keeps a solid layer of grit on the base. Are you watering down the PVA? If you are, water it down less, or not at all. I use some very coarse grain sand on my Necrons and I find not watering it down and applying it thick works best, sprinkle the sand on then very lightly press the sand down into the PVA (that last step isn't necessary for fine grain stuff, but what I'm using is pretty coarse so it helps to press it into the glue very gently and carefully).

Also make sure you're waiting for it to completely dry. PVA usually takes about a day to go fully solid.

I use Elmers glue, do a good amount, take it and press face(glue side) down into the grit, then give it about a day to dry. Think is when I drybrush lots comes off depending on the size of the grit. Fine grit about 40% or less comes off, coarse grit tends to be 70% that comes off. I have yet to use super fine so I cant say the percentage on that.

And no I do not water down the glue since water undoes this glue.
