my wash is bubbling! please help?

hey hivers. been collecting/painting on and off for last 20 years. since i was real young and rubbish at painting. but now i'm older with more time i prefer the painting side of things. i've never really used washes and have avoided them cos they always seem to foam/bubble on the figure. takes forever to blow on them to get rid of it and it doesn't dry well if i don't blow on them.

what am i doing wrong. want to copy painting guide for thunderwolves but don't want to ruin them.

any help would be great.

Mine only tend to bubble if I use too large of a brush or apply it too fast. Have you tried using a smaller brush, or perhaps only the tip of the brush? That's all I've got.

Hmmm this sounds kind of weird... I have never experienced much foam while washing :I Is everything else dry on your mini?

i have that 2,my badab black always bubbles when i put it on my models,it takes a couple of hours to dry,but then after the layer it doesn't show up anymore

This is a very common problem for me with Badab Black and Dev Mud, the reason i find it happens is because im using a base brush to wash the entire model the brush itself is thick and has enough space to create bubbles before applying it. what i do to counter this is to lightly blow on the model as i do a section which will clear up any of the bubbles. if I dont then i find spots on the model rather then clean wash.

The bubbles are generally a result of just brushing to vigorously. Just gently sweep the brush over the area and you should be fine. The GW Wash Brush is quite large (to hold more wash, presumably), and the only time I get bubbles with it is when I brush too quickly.

I use a huge brush to wash my models and I have no intention of going slower or using a smaller brush when I have a ton of models to do

What I find is that the main time bubbles form is when you brush across a crevice in such a way to make them form.

Having vastly more wash on the brush than you need and then moving it around the model to remove excess or just using a tissue to remove excess results in less bubbles than having less paint on the brush and trying to apply the correct amount to a spot. So I just apply the wash as a huge puddle and move that puddle around.

Secondly, try and paint INTO crevices instead of OVER them. If you hold your brush at a shallow angle, it'll tend to pass over crevices instead of into them, paint will go into the crevice, but bubbles will form at the same time. So when doing, say, ribs, instead of just swiping down across the ribs, forming bubbles between each rib, make sure the brush actually falls in between each rib and not just swipe over them. Combine that with using heaps of extra wash and it'll reduce bubbles.

Lastly, small (and large) bubbles will form in the pot when you shake it before you start painting... so don't shake it. You still need to mix the paint up a bit, but I just carefully swirl or tip the bottle back and forth rather than vigoursly shaking it which creates lots of small bubbles.

Either way I get a few bubbles, but doing the things I said above I'll usually end up with half a dozen little bubbles over the model instead of tons of them, so after painting a swarm I just grab a slightly finer detail brush and drop wash into the crevices where bubbles formed and caused the wash to not fully apply. It doesn't take long to do really.

Of course you could just be more careful and slow when you apply it initially like people above have suggested, but when you have 50 gaunts infront of you, you reach for the biggest brush you can find and apply it as quickly as you can.

Don't shake the bottle! I always shook my paints, as any good painter would, but I also did the same for my washes, then got confused as to why there were bubbles!

If you just stir gently, it should be fine.
