Howdy Hivemind!
To begin, these are my thoughts on the new Necrons. Though, there is a battle report that goes along with these thoughts, this is intended to be a study of the new Necrons. So please, help me dissect them and keep negativity of the quality of the battle report to yourself.
I have decided to pick up the new Necrons as my second army. After studying their strategic options and loving their new fluff I wanted to get in a proxy game to try out their effectiveness. I decided to do a 1500pt battle against my brother's Space Wolves. Here are the lists.

Whirlwind
My brother split up the Wolf Guard by placing the 3 with Power Armor in his 3 packs of Grey Hunters. The T armor Wolf Guards were all placed in a group with the Rune Priest that is using Jaws. The Other Rune Priest (Living Lightning) joined one of the packs of Grey Hunters.
I split off my Royal Court and put the two Crypteks with Harbinger of Transmorgification (HoT) in each of the Ghost Arks. My Lord with R Orb joined the 17 Warriors and my Stormlord joined up with them. Now, the codex didn't make it clear if the Royal Court was attached to the Stormlord or not. If so I would have done things a bit different but for the purposes of this game we decided that the Stormlord and the Cryptek with Harbinger of Destruction (HoD) could join the Warriors as well. (not that it really mattered as you'll see)
Deployment: Dawn of War
Game Type: Capture and Control
My brother won the roll off and choose to go first. He placed his Objective on the line of scrimmage as close to one of the short table edges as he could get. After thinking about it, I placed mine deep inside some Large Ruins on the line of scrimmage smack dab in the middle of the board.
He placed Canis and two of the three Grey Hunter packs on the line of scrimmage. Canis was at the center of the table just outside the Large Ruins were my Objective was being held. The Grey Hunters were more or less 2 feet from each short table edge.
I countered by not deploying any units and not stealing Initiative.
Space Wolves Turn 1
He brought his Whirlwind in near the short table edge opposite his Objective. The T Squad with Rune Priest walked on near the short table edge that was close to his Objective. His Rune Priest and Grey hunter Pack climb on top of a multi leveled Ruin that was touching his table edge
Everything on his side advanced towards my table edge. The Grey Hunters that were far from his objective moved near a AV 11 Bunker in which they hoped to enter next turn.
Necrons Turn 1
I brought all my units in from the center of my table edge. The Stormlord brigade walked on in the center of the board. On their left was the Triarch Stalker and on their right was the C'tan Shard. The Ghost Arks rode close to the flanks of my army; one on each side.
I moved up both Ghost Arks toward the Grey Hunter Pack that was in front of them. I moved the Triarch Stalker, the Stormlord brigade, and the C'tan directly at Canis Wolfborn. I also used my HoD's Solar Pulse.
In the shooting phase no random lightning strikes happened. I began with having the Triarch Stalker shoot Canis with his focused Heat Ray. I scored a Hit and "painted" the target. Thanks to that my Relentless Stormlord brigade annihilated Canis with their Twin Linked shots.
The C'tan ran towards the Grey Hunters near the Bunker.
The Ghost Ark (#1) that was near that bunker fired at the Grey Hunters with the Ghost Ark's Array and the HoT's Tremorstave. The Tremorstave scored a Hit which means that thanks to the C'tan's Whithering Worldscape causes all Terrain to be Dangerous for the Grey Hunter pack next turn. Thanks to the wonders of wound allocation, a Grey Hunter died to the shooting breaking the unit's coherency (for you n00b's, that means that the unit will be forced to move in the next turn to regain coherency).
The Ghost Ark (#2)on the other side of the table killed a few Grey Hunters and managed to score a Hit with the Tremorstave; same effect but without losing coherency.
Space Wolves
Turn 2
Rolled for Night Fighting and it continued.
The Space Wolves began the turn by moving their two Grey Hunter packs (who were affected by the Tremorstave) towards the Ghost Arks. Thanks to the Dangerous terrain test both squads suffered even more casualties. The group of three Grey Hunters near the Bunker fled inside the Bunker to seek refuge from the Necrons.
The Rune Priest and T Squad moved up closer to the Large Ruins at the center of the board that was holding my Objective.
The Whirlwind moved up as well.
The Grey Hunter pack near the Ghost Ark and Triarch ran forward.
The Grey Hunter pack inside the Bunker shot at the C'tan but failed to do anything.
The Whirlwind fired at the C'tan but Night Fighting made it impossible.
Night Fighting made the rest of his army not be able to shoot (even with the Space Wolves rerolls thanks to Acute Senses).
Necrons
Turn 2
Moved the Stormlord brigade toward the Large Ruins.
Moved the Triarch Stalker toward the Grey Hunters that Ghost Ark #2 had engaged.
My C'tan moved into assaulting range of the Bunker.
Ghost Ark #1 moved up to the Bunker.
No Lightning strikes in the Shooting phase.
My Triarch "painted" the Grey Hunters pack with it's template weapon.
My Ghost Ark #2 and Stormlord Brigade obliterated the Grey Hunters with their Twin Linked Gauss weapons.
Ghost Ark #1 shot at the Bunker but failed to do anything.
The C'tan Shard assaulted the Bunker exploding it and killing 2 of the remaining 3 Grey Hunters inside.
Space Wolves
Turn 3
Night Fighting ceased.
All squads moved forward.
The Rune Priest with Terminator Squad and the Whirlwind fired at the Stormlord Brigde killing 9 of the 17 died. However, the Rune Priest rolled double 1's on hs Psychic test and took an unsaved wound. but thanks to Jaws of the World Wolf still going off, 3 of the Warriors were lost and would not get their Reanimation Protocol. However, because of the R Orb that was hiding in the back, 4 Necrons got back up.
The other Rune Priest fired Living Lightning at the C'tan scroing 2 wounds on it.
The Lone Grey Hunter fired his Bolt Pistol at the C'tan... it was ineffective.
The lone Grey Hunter assaulted the C'tan and to everyone's surprise survived combat and tied up the C'tan.
Necrons
Turn 3
My Ghost Ark repaired 3 of the missing Warriors in the Stormlord brigade bringing their total back up to 16, just as if nothing had happened.
The Stormlord brigade, Triarch Stalker, and Ghost Ark #2 advanced upon the Rune Priest w/ T Squad.
Ghost Ark #1 moved into rapid fire range of the Whirlwind.
The Triarch successfully "painted" the target with its Heat Ray and the Ghost Ark #2, and Stormlord brigade shot down the Terminators and Rune Priest with their Twin Linked weapons until only the Wolf Guard with the Assault Cannon was left.
Ghost Ark #1 glanced the Whirlwind to death.
The C'tan Shard killed the Grey Hunter.
Space Wolves
Turn 4
Realizing that the game was hopeless my brother wanted to try to kill at least one of my units. So he broke off the Grey Hunter pack from the Rune Priest and moved to get into assaulting range of Ghost Ark #1 next urn. He made all his Dangerous Terrain test.
The Rune Priest cast Living Lightning at Ghost Ark #1 but got two Glancing Weapon Destroyed and Crew Shaken result result.
The Wolf Guard with the assault cannon gave up on trying to affect the approaching Stormlord brigade and turned his weapon on the C'tan bringing it down to one wound.
Necron
Turn 4
Ghost Ark #2 moved up and claimed my brother's Objective.
The Stormlord brigade moved up and claimed my objective.
The C'tan Shard moved closer to the Grey Hunters.
The Ghost Ark #1 failed its Living Metal roll but moved at Crusing Speed into Rapid Fire range of the approaching Grey Hunters.
Ghost Ark #1's occupants fired at the Grey Hunters but did nothing.
The C'tan ran into Assaulting range of the Grey Hunters.
The Stormlord brigade and the Triarch Stalker made short work of the last Wolf Guard in T armor.
Space Wolves
Turn 5
The Grey Hunters moved up but the last Wolf Guard failed his Dangerous terrain test and perished.
The Rune Priest used Living Lightning on the C'tan but failed to do anything.
The Grey Hunters assaulted the Ghost Ark #1 with krak grenades scoring a Penetrating Crew Shaken result.
Necrons
Turn 5
Ghost Ark #1's occupants piled out and Rapid Fired the Grey Hunters killing none.
The C'tan assaulted the Grey Hunters killing 4 of the 5 and surviving combat. The last Grey Hunter held his ground before the fallen star-god.
Rolled and game continues.
Space Wolves
Turn 6
Rune Priest assaults the C'tan. The C'tan kills the last Grey Hunter but the Space Wolves fail to kill the C'tan.
Necrons
Turn 6
Warriors pile into the combat and the Rune Priest takes a wound but fails to kill the C'tan. He flees combat and does not get caught in the sweeping advance. He flees within 5" of the table edge and my Necrons consolidate in right behind him to chase him off the board at the beginning of my brother's next turn.
Rolled and game ends.
Necrons - 2
Space Wolves - 0
NECRON VICTORY!!!
Thoughts-
So right off the bat I want to point out that the Necrons only permanently lost a SINGLE model during the whole game while the Space Wolves were pretty much tabled. On top of that I could have repaired that lost model with the Ghost Ark if I had wanted to.
My brother was equally impressed with how tough these guys were to kill. A large squad of Warriors with a Res Orb backed up by 2 or3 Ghost Arks has to be the toughest thing in the current realm of 40K. We started running a ton of mathhammer after the battle and decided that your best bet is to sweeping advance the unit. Otherwise they will continually get back up and chances are they'll pass their Ld for losing units to the 25% rule.
What I was really impressed with was the synergy going on. The C'tan combined with the Tremorstaves backed up my the Night Fighting rule and the Triarch Stalkers ability to make weapons fired at certain targets twin-linked just worked beautifully! I honestly felt like an unstoppable force marching across that board. Even when I got hit by a round of Jaws, Stormbolters, Assault Cannons, and the Whirlwind I shrugged it off like it was nothing. If I had been playing my nids such an attack would have easily crippled that flank of my forces. My brother just couldn't believe that I had walked through that practically unscathed.
It's obvious that you don't want to bring vehicles against mass Gauss fire but thanks to the Night Fighting rule it keeps long range vehicles from doing practically anything denying them shooting for several turns. On the flip side if you try to bring mass infantry, things like the C'tan's Withering Worldscape and the Tremorstaves really bog your army down giving the Necrons more rounds or shooting as you try to close in for the assault.
My brother summed up the Necrons with this sentence, "Nothing is really too powerful but everything combined is just so very very annoying!". I have to agree with him. There's just so many possibilities for synergy with the Necrons that it really makes this Tyranid player feel like Matt Ward gave them some kind of Synapse. lolTo take down the Necrons I would focus on eliminating key parts of their synergy before taking on the whole. Things like Deathcult Assassins and Jaws would make for excellent problem removers.
So tell me what y'all think. Have you had similar experiences? How would you describe this army? If I were to sum up my first experience with the Necrons in one word it would be "Resilient".
Peace!
