How many attacks do they get anyway?

This is about space marines. Some models have the ability to get a bolt pistol and chain sword. This increases their attack by 1 because its a pistol and a close combat weapon, but is this included in their profile?

For example, in some marine codexes it refers to sergeants as veterans and lists their attack as 2. However they also have a bolt pistol and a chainsword. Does this mean that their attack is 3?

This doesn't matter that much for sergeants, but the same problem applies to independent characters. They already have a boat load of attacks, having a power sword and a pistol gives them one more for essentially nothing.

Am I just misreading something here? Is it included in the profile already or do you add to it?

Correct. They have their attacks as noted on their base, plus their additional Pistol and non-Fist/Thunder Claw weapon increase in attacks.

Which is funny, because Tyranids when they have multiple attacks due to ST, it says in the profile 1+1 attacks...

this is wrong, power weapons don't give an extra attack if you also have a pistol because you need 2 of the same types (normal/power etc.) so having a power sword and a bolt pistol doesn't give an extra attack in CC

Read Pg. 42 again. It's only PowerFists, Thunder Hammers, and Lightning Claws that need to be paired with another of the same kind to get the bonus Attack.

code11: they don't get that attack for nothing, it's just been already figured into the Points they pay for the Weapons. Think of it instead as they waste Points if they take a Power Sword and Storm Bolter, or some other combination that doesn't let them claim that extra Attack.

Not really related, but relevant anyway. In some of the older codexes, dark angels in particular, it lists regular marine squads as be equiped with bolt pistols, chainswords and bolters.
Are the bolters for the squad and the chainsword/pistol for the sergeant? or does each marine have a pistol, chainsword, and bolter?

And if so, can they choose to wield the chainsword and pistol and claim a +1 to their attack for it?
Edit: thinking back (don't own the codex) I think it might say close combat weapon, not chainsword, but the same question applies)

That is, indeed, correct. Chaos Marines are the same: Bolter, Pistol, CCWeapon and you can choose what you use. If anyone uses a bolter, the unit can not charge... but they can all use their Pistols and CCWeapons and gain that additional attack in combat.

On a related note regarding stat listing: Striking Scorpions are listed as being Str4 in their entry in the Eldar dex. This factoring in the Chainsabres they wield, or are they actually Str5 with them?

That's actually a good question, because it doesn't factor in their extra attacks...

Beating this discussion to death (but for good reason I think): If a unit already starts with chainsword (really any cc weapon) and pistol, is it counted in their profile then?

well it doesn't say the Sargent has the cc weapon and the bolt pistol and where it has the choices for the sarge to buy it says he may replace his bolter for...

Unless it is stated in the unit's rules, then no... it will be an additional attack on top of the one that they already have in their profile.

I have here that the Striking Scorpions are S3... meaning that they will have S4 attacks with the Scorpion Chainswords.
