@post at top of page: I think it needs rephrasing... How long does it take to paint these sort of amazing models?

CoolMiniOrNot people often bug me for several reasons:
They score a paintjob based on purely artistic principles, and not the physics of reality. For example, someone will get a bunch of 10's because they are well known professional painters (so essentially, a picture of their feces would get a good score), or because they followed the "rules" of color composition and consistent palette. Those same people will then deduct a point or two from another model, say a beautifully painted Space Marine that looks gritty, real, and battle scarred, simply because there was orange on the end of the Plasma Pistol, and the photo wasn't edited with Adobe.
I sincerely doubt that a Space Marine says, "Wait guys, I can't go out to battle because my power sword isn't reflecting a lava source, the color of my pistol doesn't match anything else on my armor, and the background behind me isn't a gentle fade of blue to white."
A lot of the people on that site, the vast majority of the top painters especially, don't even play or understand the game. They paint solely for artistic reasons and commission work. There's nothing wrong with that, I'm just pointing out that the scoring is often biased towards very specific things such as NMM, light sourcing, color palette selection, and photo editing. Bonus points are awarded if the artist is well-known, or a girl.
Some of the techniques, such as NMM, are often cartoonish in their appearance, and 9 times out of 10 will look yellow, or blue, instead of like metal. The Rogal Dorn on page 1 of this thread (mistakenly labele "The Emperor"), was painted using only metallics and no NMM. I spoke with the artist myself, and asked how it was achieved. Really, it's a beautiful effect, and looks a lot more like metal than does Bubonic Brown faded into Sunburst Yellow.
Maybe I'm a bit of a fluff man, and thus I prefer my realism, but I agree with some of the previous gripes about the scoring on CMoN. It's inconsistent, and often biased towards things which aren't always necessarily relative to what constitutes a quality paint job.
EDIT: To be fair to the guy who gave that Elf an 8: it doesn't matter if he has done anything of great quality or not. A swing coach could never beat Tiger Woods in a game of golf, so should he not be allowed to critique and analyze his swing? It's possible to understand something just as well, or better than someone who can perform.

CMON is a load of (please do not swear).
Seriously, you could be a FANTASTIC painter, and still get a 5. Table-top quality in my eyes means painted, no matter the quality.

Yeah, i agree...some people miss the true concept. Space Marines aren't pretty, sorry Marine Players...it's true.. In fact you're playing a race that's obsessed with a dude in Gold Armor, and that live for war... It's like fanatic Humans wearing Power Armor and taking steroids...all you need is Chuck Norris to lead them all. (Chuck Norris in Gold Terminator Armor... )

It's like fanatic Humans wearing Power Armor and taking steroids...all you need is Chuck Norris to lead them all. (Chuck Norris in Gold Terminator Armor... ) Before I jump on the bandwagon and lament about CMON (LoL) I agree with these two posters to a certain degree. Although I take pride in painting my models at least to an above average table top standard, I seldom spend that much time doing (or even attempting) to paint to CMON grade 8+ standard. Simply because of the lack of time! However, if somebody would give me some incentive (like MONEYYYYYYyyy) I would gladly spend 120 hours of my life masterclassing a model like a, lets say a grot. However, for practical reasons, I plan to finish painting all my models to the <<best time:quality standard>> I can achieve. Perhaps, this is why I really admire guys like Scab who are able to masterclass every model in their army. Now, THAT is awesome pride. Perhaps, I'm a bit impatient because I want to lay down pie plates with my Boomerfex this weekend rather than.... next year? xD But yah, the grading system in CMON annoys me more often than not, there seem to be 2 - 3 "Acclaimed International Standards for Table-top Miniature Painting Styles" there (and anywhere else) and there is a severe lack of variety in terms of painting. And I kid you not, once those painted models hit the table, they are just toy soldiers (with colour) being sent to their doom. Heck, I don't even look at my models when I'm not playing (but this might be because I have a severe lack of space to display them). I have done commissions for people who collect the models for display only and have done commissions for people who are only interested in playing (and only want a certain few models to be "master-classed"). At the end of the day, I stress that CMON is simply a good website for reference just in case you need some reference to something you want to attempt. Or a personal challenge. Painting models well is an ability worth acknowledgement, however not to the extend of idolisation. Furthermore, anybody can achieve "Golden Daemon" standards, all you need is time, a hell of a lot of practice and the right tutorials to point you the right direction. Nobody is a born model painter, you should see the early works of those guys who are great painters! You'd go WtF?!?!? xD
