Hey all! Just wanted to show off my fully magnetised Tyrant. I've been really interested in magnetising since getting into tyranids and seeing just how many options/flexibility some units have (tyrants being probably the main offenders). Being a cheap fella I figured it would be better to hack apart one model instead of buying two (plus having MC units that can be disassembled does wonders for transporting them safely) So, gave it a bash and I think it turned out rather well
This was all done with a hand hobby drill (similar to the one GW sell), 1mm - 4.5mm drill bits of varying sizes, 3x2mm and 4x1.5mm magnets, copious amounts of green stuff and a red marker/scalpel to check magnet polarity.
90% of the magnets were sunk into drilled holes, rather than the other method of, for example, cutting off the 'ball' of an arm and then reconstructing it with green stuff and an embedded magnet. As pewter is such a pain in the proverbial to work with compared to plastic this was the quicker method (and in my opinion provides the best results - even with plastic - provided you're careful about your drilling.
btw - the string on the tail is holding the tail in place while some greenstuff sets
So - here's all the parts (I havn't magnetised the venom cannon or deathspitters yet as I'm unlikely to use them.)
The base and leg of the tyrant are both magnetised with 4mm mags (I drilled into the rock to secure the base magnet - it's suprisingly easy - or at least easier than drilling into the pewter). The pin on the tyrant's other hoof sinks into a tight fitting greenstuff hole under the base. Combined the the magnet in the hoof the entire model does not wobble on the base in the slightest.
The legs and torso are held together by 4 4mm mags, secured with GS and superglue inside holes drilled with a 4.5mm drill bit. I'd have preferred to use 2 larger magnets rather than 4 smaller ones to allow rotation but I didn't have any to hand
Slightly excessive but I magnetised the head using 3mm magnets!
Here's the meat of magnetising: arm slots. Again, 4mm magnets sunk into 4.5mm holes packed with GS and superglue. The torso's deliberately positioned as if the Tyrant's leaning forward (as I'll mainly be using him as frontline CC and love the idea of one of these beasts literally bearing down on a squad of ultramarines).
The weapons! The devourers, BS/lashwhip and STs were drilled into and had the magnets sunk into the balls of the arms and the joins smoothed over with GS. The stranglethorn cannon had to have its ball reconstructed with GS after I messed up. Oops.
And finally all-assembled and ready to squish some over-enthusiastic Sisters of Battle!
Took about 3 evenings of coming back to it on and off whilst doing washes on some termy and hormy broods. Now it'll take about 3 years to paint!
Happy to answer any questions peeps may have! Happy bio-matter nomming. o/
