Birth of Hive Fleet M'yen'ka (WIP)

Hey guys,

Long time no post, I'm still working through painting my army slowly but surely.

I have a few questions.

Question the first: What do you think of the base coat on this Tyrant Guard (Pic attached).

Question the second: I'm not sure how I want to do the carapace, I don't want to do the same style that everyone else seems to be doing (lines), I already have almost 20 gaunts painted up with the "skin" painted up as per a variation on Krakenfiend's "How to expertly paint Hive fleet behemoth" (excellent step by step by the way) with the carapace base coated in boltgun and a few layers of green ink, I'm going for a beetle carapace type effect (kind of metallic when you look at it up close, image also attached) but I think the green is too bright, I might try darkening it a bit with a black ink wash, we'll see.

Anyway, for my tyrant guard, I want it to look a little more intimidating, any suggestions?

I got a suggestion... Don't worry about making it look intimidating... It will be!

I personally think that armies with consistant paint, and a uniform look are more intimidating than anything! Just make it look like everything else you already painted. Christmas beetle nids seem fun! =)

Good idea, I think I'm going to have to buy more ink..

You also gave me a good idea for my hive fleet name:

Weihnachtenkäfer (according to alta vista translation it's christmas beetle in German, correct me if I'm wrong)

I might use it or not, depending if I think of something cooler.

Does anyone have the Tau codex?

My buddy is starting a Tau Army and since he'd be my primary rival, I'd like to know what Christmas Beetle would be in Tau (Why do I get these good ideas while I'm at work?)

From the German i know since elementary school (not awefully lot) om pretty sure its suposed to be Weihnachtskäfer.

I think i just fell in love with your gaunt by the way.

Mecha Tau is one of the hardest enemies for tyranids as far as i see it.

The first time i translated it in alta vista i got Weihnachtskäfer

I tried translating it back to english, but it didn't work..

so I tried Weihnachtenkäfer (after translating Christmas and Beetle seperately) and it translated back to Christmas Beetle..

So I don't know.. i might go with Tau spelling/pronounciation if someone here posts it or when I get home and check out my buddie's Codex.

And I don't really need tactica yet (My army is far from finished and my buddy just started, so he's even farther from ready). Thanks anyway though, I'll keep it in mind when we start playing (after we finish the Battle for Maccrag missions)

and what's with the " Still, no worries?" ? I see it in every post you do, is it a signature or are you typing it every time?

The problem is that for example Weihnachtsbaum is one word where it in English would be two words (Christmas tree).

Enought with gramatical rules though, i do type no worries after each post, its not a siggy.

I actually did a search and found a site online with some Tau language.

It's a tossup between 2 names that I've done from there (it'll depend on the Fluff that I come up with).

First one is : M'yen'ka (Unforseen strike)
Or : Mont'au (The terror)

I'll see what i can come up with for fluff, so far it's about the hive fleet bing discovered by Tau on a planet in the fringes of their territory.

I'd go with M'yen'ka there. Mont'au is less of a direct translation and more of a concept. To the Tau Mont'au represents the dark times from before the Ethereals came, when their species was set to tear itself apart in civil war. Mont'au also means a kind of self-centered way of thinking, sort of the opposite of the selfless "Greater Good".

anyway, i think you should make the tyrant guard more or less the same - possibly with a different coloured carapace though....

The only issue I can see with the metallic finish is how are you going to add any depth? Like shading etc... Can you do that with metallic paints?
