Fleshborer hive any good?

I'm planning on getting a tyrannofex for my Tyranid army and wanted to give it a fleshborer hive. I'm pretty new and just wanted to know if it is any better than the other options. (I'm talking about the 9th edition version btw)

Acid spray is still the best choice imo; auto-hitting is great and S6 AP-3 2D makes it good into a lot of targets. Borer Hive is better into hordes with poor saves, but those types of units are not commonly played this edition.

Fleshborer Hive isn't *bad* but it's probably the weakest of the three options. Issues with it are:

1.) The best target for it, large hordes, are mostly absent in 9th edition. The lethality of weapons in 9th has made them an extremely unpopular choice.

2.) Other options are competitively priced to do the job about equally. A Thornback with quad Devs and Enhanced Senses is 45 points cheaper and puts out nearly the same firepower. Not quite the same, but point for point its pretty comparable.

3.) The Acid Spray has a more universally flexible profile, putting out enough shots for hordes while also having the damage and AP to munch through heavy infantry. The Rupture Cannon doesn't have a flexible profile, but fills a unique niche as our most powerful artillery, with a higher strength and damage than any other gun.

Ok so the acid spray is better, but I got this idea to give the tyrannofex toxin sacs as well to balance out the low strength/ap, that would work, right?

Toxin Sacs only affect melee attacks.

There is still pathogenic slime to make use of toxin sacs on ranged guns. However, Toxin Sacs do not bypass saves so FBH is still hampered by low AP and the Tyrannofex is unable to gain any reroll buffs to help reduce variance of auto wounding on 6’s.

Just a piece of theory:
Kronos + Scorch Bugs strat = 30 17” S6 Ap-2 + 8 of the same with S5. If you combine this with Tyranid Prime SI (which doesnt work with Acid Spray) you can rake up quite a lot of hits. If your meta is heavy on 1W units, Acid Spray is kind of an overkill.

The tyrannofex is such an easy model to magnetize. If you want to try out FBH you only need four holes and magnets. If you want another weapon options down the line, you can magnetize and paint your new option up in just an evening. This way you have all the options and are future proofed come next edition.

I can second that opinion, magnetising is actually much easier than it seems from the outset.

I have successfully fully magnetised a tyrannofex, carnifex and warriors with ease. It's not as easy to mess up as you may think.

The flamer tyranofex is not bad. But my opponents keeps charging it. And then they do not kill it and I take my turn and flame them. My two last opponents have done this now. I do not know why.

Lol, if the hisory of the imperium has taught us anything, it is that only the nids actually put in the effort to learn anything about their enemies.

Back in the day, my Acid-Tyrannofex had a glorious time incinerating every Shining Spear unit which tried to charge him.

Seriously though, I don’t think the fleshborer hive is bad, it just doesn’t do as well as the other weapon options. If it cost less or added something we don’t have access to it would be an interesting discussion on if you should take it, but as it is now there isn’t much reason to take a sub par option.
