The new Combat Patrol is an okay start. Many units are looking useable in the new Codex, so what type of army are you looking to play?

The new tyranid codex goes up for pre-order this weekend, Id start there.

If you can wait and see how the meta shakes out you can make some better purchases. If you have to get something now then I'd stick to the evergreen units: hive tyrant, gaunts, genestealers, and carnifex. They may not be the best units in the codex, but I've always found ways to get value out of them. The new patrol box that's coming out this month has a lot of these models and would be a good place to start.

In all honestly you can take whatever you like. Our codices usually have great internal balance. Just start with the basic, a couple of HQs and some troops and go from there. Find the playstyle you like and get more of those units.

Imo there are units that are kind of a backbone of the army due to their overall usefulness and awesomeness This is ofcourse not strict and ymmv but in a loose order:

Hive Tyrant - CC monster, huge survivability, awesome Relics including ranged options. Closest to a must-have unit.
Warriors - the stats, damage output and overall flexibility are simply fantastic for the points cost.
Zoanthropes - their SI is bonkers and their witchfire damage output can be huge.
Venomthropes - -1 to hit aura (a flat -1, not some „benefits of cover” mambo-jumbo) for a CC oriented army is invaluable.

The rest is up to you. If you want to go monster heavy then Carnifexes, Maleceptor and propably an Exocrine are all decent choices. If you want to go carpet-style gaunts in huge numbers can be useable (and fun if not a bit overpriced points-wise).

At least 10 Horms, that 16" move is great for swiping objectives. They feel appropriately priced imo after using them; the strat Bounding Leap is so good and they make great use of Adrenal Glands or Toxin Sacs based on Hive Fleet.

My guess is Warriors probably go up ~5ppm in the post-codex balancing, so I wouldn't go HAM buying them until the codex settles in.

Having spend thousands of pounds on bugs since being a new player my advice for starting a new army is:

1. Purchase the codex
2. Read the codex
2. Build an army (however big you want better start smaller)
4. Play a game
5. Expand

This will stop you buying stuff you don’t need and won’t use (I have 9 carnifex and I think I’ve used max 5 in a game for example).
