compared to other 5th edition armies that weren't also (please do not swear). CSM and BA were particularly garbage and in the same boat. the toys were not all handed out equally. guard was a real boogeyman during this time though it wasn't something i had to deal with (the only guy i knew that played guard then was as new as i was and i rolled him pretty thoroughly). space wolves was foul, as was GK when they got their new codex, along with crons and dark eldar.

i pretty handily bodied the folks i gamed with because frankly they were baby seals and begging for a good clubbing. but i also had friends that were heavy competitive players. one would fly out (i've known this dude 25 years at this point) and we'd play and it would be a very different story.

the codex was fine if you were playing either a faction that had a (please do not swear) codex, or if you were playing with low to mid skill players. outside of that, the issues started to show quickly. there was a very brief period where people were trying to throw as many T6 bodies on the table as possible (back when that was something noteworthy) with trygons and tervigons but it really didn't have legs. the firepower was there to delete them.

there was also a brief period of time after 6th dropped but we still had the 5th edition codex when we were gods. i will never forget biomancy with tervigons. so much fun.

Walking spawning pit has its merits but durability is the only thing should be conserned with. Giving it crushing claws was a joke since there would never be a place where the hivemind would dedicate that much biomass to a task suited for a much simpler carnifex. For that matter think about how many gants could be made out of equal mass... does anyone have a tervigon mass vs termagant mass?

Hehehem sure, people tend to remember the good stuff. The problem with the 5th edition codex was it's horrendous internal balance. There were good things, some even close to broken, and there were absolute turds that couldn't have seen playtesting at all. For example, what did you guys think about the... Pyrovore...?

Oh the pyrovore was a running joke for 2 or 3 editions straight. Often referred to as the single worst unit in all of 40k. Really though, it had three major flaws with it.
1. the unit size was tiny so you couldn't really abuse the flamer templates with them.
2. they had little in the way of delivery options. You could pod them in but there were much better uses for those pods.
3. they had an absurdly high cost per mini for what amounted to a dude with a heavy flamer that hurt a little to hit in melee.

If point 3 and either of the other two points were fixed, they honestly would have been GREAT! But between all three they were a hot mess.

But it really wasn't hard to find worthless dataslates in that codex. You had a roughly 50/50 chance on any given dataslate of finding utter garbage.

If you ignored the abysmal internal balance, and just used the good units, the codex was a Blast! It really felt like how nids are supposed to play. Coming at you from all sides, able to pop out of nowhere, sneaking up on you from behind, and making target priority a bit of a nightmare. No codex since has really captured that feeling. I honestly don't expect our 9th edition codex to pull it off either, but at least I have hopes of better internal and external balance with the rest of 9th ed.

Given that they fixed Tau, I have high higher hopes for our codex. If they’re willing to do a complete overhaul on a codex to fix it than it shows me they have the stones to make the changes we need to be good.

I will go to bat for the pyrovore. He was a great piece of out of the box thinking. The only one in the 5th edition codex. Poorly executed of course, but at least they took a chance on a new idea.

For those of you who don’t know, the pyrovore used to explode when killed by a weapon that caused instant death (kind of like how vehicles can explode). The idea was that you ran him up to the enemy and flamed them with his flamer, then charged what was left. The enemy unit would have to crowd around the pyrovore in close combat and the hidden power fist on the sergeant would instant kill him (every squad had a hidden power fist). When the pyrovore then exploded the whole enemy squad would be in the splash zone.

Unfortunately it never worked out this way because your opponent would just kill your pyrovore with a missile on turn one and kill your guys with your own pyrovore.

they didn't exactly fix tau so much as strap a rocket powered dildo to its back. 70%+ win rate after you remove mirror matches. i'd say to expect the pendulum to swing back hard on them but lol this is GW.

As others have said, my memory of 5th ed tyranid codex was an internal mess that was noticeably worse than the 4th ed book. Maybe the 4th ed book was too good, but my win loss record tanked with the 5th ed book.
But.. we got some sweet new models.

Codex Tervigon/Hive Guard? No thanks, I’ll take the flexibility off the 8th Ed codex any day. Haven’t used a tervigon since I came back in 8th and not that sad about it.

The tervigon was better then has been since but it still wasnt great. And hivegaurd never stopped ruling the roost.
