A Little Birdy Told Me: Tyranid Codex TBA in 2-3 Months

Everytime codex hopes and predictions wander into lore you know the thread has gone off the rails. To be fair, the lore of EVERY codex is that they are baddest and bestest of the grim dark. You really can't take anything from lore and hope to see it in the rules other than a general feeling.

My son has been a long time Ork player (since he was 12 and he's married on his own now). His biggest complaint with the new codex is that it isn't fun to play. That's pretty damning for a game. I'll be content with whatever GW gives us as long as it is fun or I won't play. It's a game and a hobby, if I'm not having fun, I've lost sight of why I'm doing it.

If Ork lore is to believed, then their codex is the best as long as they BELIEVE it is the best.

It's not because the Swarmlord is a stoop, it's because GW cant have SM losing. Before the Swarmlord was a thing and it was just a "uniquely powerful tyrant" it was portrayed as much more threatening.

True. Perhaps it was the constant reincarnation of the tyrant that made it less effective.

Or the fact that characters with no character and no personal/lore impacting ramifications from their death can well...be killed off.

Several times in fact, with several more to come as long as there are real characters with spaces for more notches on their weapons.

It's really sad, theres nothing that annoys me more than having a threat built up simply to be cut down to extend the resume of the latest flashy hero. It takes the threat and belittles it until it isn't a threat at all. Because the antagonist never really accomplishes anything or threatens or even tests the hero forcing them to grow. Its lazy and makes for bad story telling.

I find current SM vs nids books are very similar to the following. SM's learn of nids nom noming something that ultimately has no impact, SM show up, do things everyone else could not do, save day. The end of the story normally erases all damage done by the nids undercutting their impact/threat. Blood of baal did this all to well with the only faction being impacted by the war being the tyranids themselves.

Did the tyranids kill alot of marines? Yes, an entire chapter in the orbital war. Who were they/or were they important. Dont know/no.

Did they wipe out other chapters? Yes, several in the ground war. Who were they/or were they important? Dont know/no.

The tyranids did do large amounts of damage to named chapters too however..until they didn't due to deusex machina reinforcements. Yay back to full strength with the flick of a pen.

Parts of that book were great but I did not like the book as a whole, personally I think it should have been stretched into two. And now I'm rambling.. curse you poor story structure!

You mean how they gave us toxicrenes, talked them up huge then brought out the wraithknight not too long after, and within its article they rejoiced by saying it could slay 3 toxicrenes by itself with no rebuttal?

Thats how little they give a (please do not swear) about us. just remember that.

Bait and switch White dwarf, nerfs out the wazoo and we're always the butt of the joke (dead models on bases, the merry christmas photo)... its almost Stockholm syndrome at this point

Any reasons why he doesn't find it fun? The ork codex looked pretty good to me.

It's always been a goofy and charming codex. He said it no longer really feels that way. Not that it's bad (though not great), just not fun. The increased toughness is great and all, but with Drukhari being so strong the extra toughness is not that big of a deal. They didn't really get that much of a buff for melee which is where they need to excel. The vehicles no longer splitting after deployment means that they can't hide on most boards, a footprint of 3 is huge. He recently painted up a ton of the buggies and they just aren't that viable though ramshackle helps. He said every game that he has played with them he hasn't survived beyond turn 4 even when he won. They can jump out on points the first 2 turns but quickly have nothing left. He says you jump out to a big lead and then hope to hang on to it as you army vanishes. This makes the second half of the game pretty non-interactive. The emotion of it might be hangover from the days when a tabling was an auto lose situation.

I remember getting excited about the toxicrene and if I remember the white dwarf article correctly, they actually mention it one shotting a wraithknight due to its hyper toxicity during an actual game. And I never even got to use mine before they nerfed it. Sucks because it's a really awesome model.

Never bought one. To insulted. Infact I didn't buy much of the minis they released along side it, they took so long to release the tervigon I had already converted my own and I was just pissed at them as a whole

Yeah the other week I tore my wings off the Shrikes I have, gonna be mad if they're back in the new dex next year

The toxicrene had a change to cause instant death on a 6 IIRC. Then they doubled down on the WK and made it immune to ID.

Yea nothing like buying a model, building it, and then having it nerfed before you ever even field it.

I’d argue that the tryannofex is still good and doesn’t need help (at least with acid spray, the rupture cannon needs work).
