Tyranid Battleforce for Xmas

Greetings

I was gone from 40k until halfway through 8th. I'll be honest the Primaris models lured me back in after being gone since early 5th edition. I am a slow painter (physical and other life issues) and jsut last year actually started playing. I've had a blast with my DIY <Raven Guard> and became quite good with them. I was even able to go 3-2 at a 4 person/10 team tournament held in Indy couple months ago with borrowed Knights. I'd never played with or against Knights but they seem to be easy to learn and I had great time. I definitely want to take my Primaris to a tournament when conditions allow.

That all said I am interested in a second army and while Knights were fun and would be easy to paint, easy doesnt seem to be my thing. I really don't want to paint a horde and less details needed the better but I needed something not in power armor . . . . and I saw the Christmas boxes. I remember my Space Wolves Terminators 2e crushing hordes of Nids. I also remember my DIY vanilla Chapter getting trampled by a monster army of Carnifex and Warriors at the Chicago GamesDay in 2004/5? Only thing I ever remember taking me to the woodshed like that was an Eldar player in 3e. I've never know this army well, but as a Heinlein fan since a young teen Tyranids are the one Xenos army that always just felt right as the counterpart to my Marines.

I write all this as a way to say hello and thank you all for your thoughts on the Christmas 2020 Battleforce box. I have about $300 in store credit and I think I might want to just grab 2 of these if the store can get them. It seems currently genestealers aren't a competitive choice (and I am a competitive player) but I have no problems challenging myself if it isn't crippling and I really like the Genestealer and Warrior models. I faced two Nid players in 8e and I'll say 9e seems a better environment for everyones favorite space bugs. I'm not a fan of everything in the box (Gargoyles) but to here even the ones Im clueless about (Exocrine) are goof means if the store has them I'll likely be back soon for advice what to add with them (2 Lictors+?)

Naw.. No way is an exo, 3hg,tyrant, gargoyles and some genestealers worth >200usd..

ya i am hard pass to i was considering it, and when i saw the price, i said im good, im pretty happy with what ive got going on right now, would have been more to "future proof". I saw someone saying hive guard werent as good for the points.

The price for all of the others new in box is about $310 usd if my math is correct, so based upon GW pricing it's a good deal. For a person new to tyranids, they'd have a solid starting force.

The only use I'd have for it is for hive guard or the exocrine, so it's a hard pass for me as well.

I would have liked to see this at the $150 (US) price point, but $200 is fair.

GW has been out of exocrines and hive guard for so long that their inclusion alone makes this worth the price if you need them. On top of that they set you up with stealer slingshot in the box. I know that most of you think this is an out of date tactic; but it is an easy tactic for new players to grasp and should be in a product geared towards new players.

If you are just starting out this is a must buy. This is a fully playable Army straight out of the box, which is more than can be said than about 90% of GW starter products. Is it a top tier army? No. Is it good enough to do well while you learn the game? Yes.

Veteran players have a bit more to think about. I would think that if you need three of the five units in the box than it is worth picking up.

I just started Nids earlier this year after I introduced my friend to wargaming via Warcry -> Kill Team and as of the last few weeks, proper 40k. I've got about 2k points already but this is perfect for grabbing a lot of stuff I'll need (a 2nd Exocrine, 3 more HG, a Tyrant kit). Only thing I'm not that excited for is the Gargoyles.

It's literally Hive Guard, Exo, and HT in one set, and the rest is both free and (at the moment) bad

I wouldn’t say gargoyles and stealers are bad. Granted, I don’t think ten gargoyles is a useable unit size; but that doesn’t make the unit bad. Stealers went up in points just like everything else. At there current points they are playable, just not disposable. We can’t just throw them at a problem and hope they both go away like we did in 8th edition.

Someone told me the gargoyles could be good to make winged warriors, not sure if thats viable or if its coming or a good idea but seems cool

I'm pretty convinced that genestealers are our worst troop choice. You might still think they are playable but gants would be better for this box and warriors wouldve made it a definite buy for me.

Hey, I love me some gaunts. Every tyranid player needs more gaunts, whether they know it or not. If gaunts were on this box I’d be just as happy.

This is more a question of who these sets are designed for. If it’s for veterans than gaunts are a great choice because everyone needs more gaunts. If it’s for beginners than stealers are the right choice. They are more expensive, but that’s not as much of a problem because they’ll probably have a low model count anyway. That and stealers feel like they do more than gaunts to a new player.

I have been eyeing tyranids for a couple of years and think two of these boxes along with a start collecting might make a fun start. Can the battleforce boxes be preorder through independent flgs or are they usually exclusive to GW stores/online?
