Why is the exocrine considered better than the Tyrannofex?

Is it the heavy 6 instead of heavy 3? it seems t fex has more wounds and can fire the stinger salvo and rupture canon vs, the exocrine getting just the bioplasmic cannon, but the exocrine get +1 to hit if it didnt move, both can shoot twice. I have a tfex on order and was looking at whether or not i need an exocrine ive heard it come up alot, and it seems the tfex is comparable.

There is a stratagem for Exocrines that allow them to move and count as stationary for shooting.

More shots, flat damage and extra AP, +1 to hit, can move and double tap etc for 1 CP with a BoB strat, +1 combos really well with symbiostorm for exploding 5s. Exo is so much better than rupture fex. Acid fex is potentially interesting as a midfield brick, but...I don't think it's really durable enough to do that, and D3 damage hurts.

More generally, multi-shot weapons that do 2/3 flat damage are just straight up better in the current meta. Exocrines and Hierodules will do a decent job against both vehicles and multi-wound infantry, making them very flexible options. A Tyrannofex requires a specialist weapons choice that can do OK against vehicles OR infantry, but not both.

We've all rolled 1 damage with a Rupture Cannon shot or two, but an Acid Spray is potentially worse. Even if you do well with wounds & saves, you can still whiff horribly if you roll the random D3 damage in the 'wrong' order. Rolled 1 then a 3? - that's four damage to kill a two-wound marine!

I think the rupture cannon has its place. Only the 2+ save really makes the hierodule more likeable imo, I have a pretty good feeling the rupture cannon will have the equivalent of the new talons as its stat line but static str. Ie str10 ap-3 d3+3 but heavy 4.

8 shots of that is very powerful, but for now even the scythed heriodule puts out more damage in shooting.

alright thanks for the info, wish i knew this before i ordered a tfex XD. going to try and cancel and change it to an excrine, which i was originally going to get and than was told get the tfex for tyrant arms and anti tank but the arms ive got covered so exocrine it is.

As a note: no one knows what's going to happen when our codex drops (no one knows when that's happening either). If you also want the tfex then keep the order. Also, if your group is relaxed, just proxy your tfex as an exocrine. I think the sizes are similar.

ok ill do that, the tfex is one of my favorite models and i didnt want to be that guy doing poxies, but i guess one proxy wouldnt hurt and like you said, rules are up in the air anyways, theoretically it seems it should be better, higher point cost and all so maybe theyll rebalance it.

Honestly, as long as you're not playing in a high end tournament, I don't see an issue with proxies (within reason). Just keep the model size the same and make it so your opponent can tell what your units are and what they're equipped with (ie no tfex as an exocrine and another tfex as a tfex).

Let’s be clear, the t-fex is not a bad unit. 2d6 auto hits that usually wound on 3+ and do d3 wounds is a pretty good weapon profile. The rupture cannon is the only long range anti-armor weapon in our codex.


If you really get into the weeds on this you’ll find that the t-fed, exocrine, and devilfex do roughly the same amount of damage to a generic target. So the choice between them comes down to your local meta, your personal preferences, and the availability of the models. In short, get what you like.

Yeah exactly! Keep the tfex if you love the model. End of the day, you’ll likely own both at one point, and who knows what will be better when the codex eventually drops.

If you mathhammer it the rupture cannon has a better points to damage ratio on T8 models. That was before it went down in points.

Now T7 and below other things are better then. Do not remember them all, but hiveguards and exoshrines come out better.

It is also worth mentioning that T8 models are the bane of my tyranids. I do think there is a place for Tyranofex with rupture cannons if you feel inclined.

Yoritomo is right - buy because LIKE before buying for stats. Stats can change anytime, and most people are cool with Proxies. The Exocrene is smaller in size than the Tyrannofex but they share the same base size so no one will really complain if you use a TFex. 

Regarding STATS, the TFex is still the tankiest base stats in the codex, the Heirodule only now coming in to compete with it. This gun is STILL a better anti-tank gun than what the Exocrene has, assuming average dice rolls (I dont like D6 damage due to swingy nature, but dice can fail anytwhere). The Acid Spray version is also quite solid in of itself, and can feature in less SUPER COMPETITIVE events and do well. If it got the "Shoot as if didnt move" strategem too, I would have gone in for TFex instead of the Exocrene, that flamer is just that good when it gets to shoot twice. 

There is nothing wrong with proxies if your army is well painted and the model is close enough - people just dont like using Redemptors as Riptides or something equally silly, or playing against cardboard. That's not being "That Guy". Being snide and unecessarily negative is being "that guy".
