no, they're just different. instead of using your normal attacks and getting 3 each you just make 10 bonus ones at str 5 ap-1 1d

It still has a 2+/5++ save.

Bio Plasma Torrent: assault 2d6 S7 AP -3 D1.

Lashwhip Pods: each time the bearer fights it makes 10 extra attacks with this. S5 AP -1 1 damage.

I agree but I can't see myself running 3 instead of exocrine but I'm definitely going to run one as distract o fex

Unfortunately it is mathematically better in every aspect for 105 pts (60% increased cost):

- Tankyness is on par with 2+ and 6 wounds which should be about 50% increased tankyness (more with a 6++ from Leviathan since it scales better the more wounds you have)
- The weapon is better (S8 AP-2 is better than S7-AP3 in all cases atm) and can be used when on the move (and it moves 8" so it isn't slow as hell like the Exocrine which also has the problem of being able to use the 1 CP stratagem on just 1 Exocrine per turn)
- The Melee damage output is worlds apart
- Any stratagem you're using on a Barbed Hierodule is worth more due to it being 275 pts rather than 170 pts

Too bad they are so expensive, tho i usually play patrol, and 1 Barbed Hierodule seems to be quite good new "run at the enemy and kill some stuff, while others do secondaries and take objectives" thing

I'm not aware of this S8 ap-2 is better than S7 ap-3. I remember early 8th we'd already done the stat comparison and it was pretty conclusive that HG were only good because of shoot twice and Exo were only bad because of can't move trap, and on a pure profile basis the two had extremely similar performances across the relevant target types (S4 3+, S7 3+, S8 3+)

With Gravis being a huge thing I don't think S8 is all that big a deal. If anything, it's (S8 ap-2 2D/d3D)a good counter weapon to Bladeguard Vets to force the Transhuman on them and allow anyone else to shoot at it.

Not done any math, but off the cuff I think Barbed is pretty good but not replacing the Exocrene. Movement issues are still not trivial on many ruin map types that tourneys seem to play, leaving shuffling MCs to be a bit slower than they really need to be, and Exos are one of the better candidates for strategic reserves due to PL9.

T8 2+sv is a BIG deal for the Barbed to have though. I'm very happy to have one that will be more popular, hopefully.

Haven't felt this excited about Nids or GSC for quite awhile.

It's a good thing that none of these options smoke out other choices. It makes them actual *choices* instead of giving many options, but very limited viable ones.

I'm on the 'scythed' train over barbed. Exocrines already fill the role of shooting fairly well, and I think having AP 3 is a big deal in a meta of space marines. Versus T5, Strength 8 and 7 are the same. Meanwhile, the scything hierodule is an excellent offensive beast that is willing to use Swarmlord's Hive Commander to get into place without losing too much shooting. The Barbed Hierodule is not likely to take advantage of a double move. With a double fight stratagem the scythed hierodule can pick up a a lot of 3 wound models.

I don't think scythed has much advantages over dima: it's T8 vs native 5++, dima gets more melee damage and more mobility, as well as potential FNP. Scythed gets shooting, but not super relevant if you're Swarmlord'ing.

I’m actually not that sold on all this.

It really feels like a bit of a cash grab from GW. Sticking some forge world band aids on your army to make it work isn’t really what I’d consider good design. I’m hopeful that it shows what could be in store for us in the new book tho.

I agree but you do have the option of dermic symbiosis and catalyst to remedy that disadvantage for the ’dule. I’d rather use that on something else though. With 9th terrain I also think that a huge base is a disadvantage, especially for a melee beast if it can’t get to where it needs to be. A good fast attack option is also way more attractive than a heavy support slot where you already have exocrines and mawlocs.

Mawlocs aren't bad you know. Their mortal wound Strat is pretty consistent output, and the positional power of having them block wherever you need to block cannot be understated.

I guess, but t2 is a bit of a wait to stop people from getting to where they probably already are almost to in the first place. I find he eats gun lines good but most people can span smaller zones to stop him from getting juicy targets or split up enough where it does nothing.
