Mawloc stuck in cc problem?

The rule for Mawloc says "At the beginning of any of your Movement phases, any Mawloc that is not within 1" of an enemy unit can burrow".
So if your enemy keep a unit in cc with him he cant borrow right? I had never noticed this before and this makes mawloc much worse then I thought.
I was gonna use two in a friendly game and try the new mawloc strat but now I just feel like they are useless.

Had you noticed this before and how do you like them?

The Mawlock was fun in 5th edition. But everything nids in that edition was sliiiightly overpriced.

The 8th edition mawlock is sort of a one trick pony and that trick is popping up and eating. The strategem makes that trick better. As you have summericed, he is very bad after that. Consider having him either as a roadblock, have him help take out dangerush targets in help with other high damage weapons or smite. If you are using him as a roadblook some biovores can help make life difficuly. Biovores missing shots and landing mines and the mawlock are some of very few units that can land within 9" of the enemy. The enemy can not move close to 1" of you.

Perhaps play them in a shooty list. Or with GSC or IG allies who can rain down lascannon shots while you gum up the board.

Also look into the blood of baal custom hive fleet that gives scything tallons AP-1.

I think Trygons are decent, but not great. I think Mawlocs are a waste of points currently.

Neither Trygon or Mawlock fight at their weight. Too easily killed and bad degrading stats once injured become useless.
Both should be terrors of the table more like pissed off kittens.

The Mawlocks sneak attack can be fun if your foe spaces bad and you can nom a char or two, but not worth it.

The trygon is not bad. It hits like a truck! S7, loads of attacks, rerolls loads of AP and damage. All of that, it does well.

The problem is he has a large footprint. And he is T6 so he dies very easy. A dead trygon is no use to anyone. Very rarly it gets into combat you care about. Units with power fists kills him easy.

Niiai you make my point exactly. At best its a single round of combat before it gets toasted.
It will not reclaim anywhere near its points. (it hits below its weight)

I disagree. It is a substantial threat and takes at least some effort to remove from the board and distracts firepower that could be aimed at your Tyrants or OOE. If it survives to make combat, it can do a LOT of damage. But in addition, it can act as warrior, devilgaunt, or genestealer delivery.

I don't think the Trygon is great, but it is definitely decent. It can be utilized as a distraction fex combined with a drop pod. I think it might be SLIGHTLY overcosted for that role, but not hugely.

I use to really dislike the Trygon, or at least not dislike it just like the Carnifex so much more. Mostly because it was cheaper, more flexible and I just had more of them. However now with the Trygon point decrease and our option to take MC boosters in place of our garbage Warlord traits I think it makes them a lot more viable than they were before. Carnifex without any upgrades are cheap but most games end up doing nothing, pumping enough points into a fex to make it actually viable puts it into the 90-120 point range, and seeing how the Trygon is now just 143 points it's hardly more expensive than a fex. When you factor in the ability to tunnel and transport the cost is good. I'd say the biggest downside is the D6 dmg weapons, they should have just made them 4 or 5 like Ironclad dread CCWs.

Mostly what I've seen after a few games is how a Trygon is more viable depending on the board, terrain and mission. There was one game I played with so much terrain straight down the middle of the board it forced the game into a Left/Right two different battles on each side. In an instance like that where both armies have their forces split in half a giant monster tunneling up to put more pressure on half of the board would be a huge help, especially since there were Whirlwinds on each side I couldn't hit at all. Trygon is big, scary, does lots of damage and just appears to say 'howdy' before body slamming into units. It's more of a utility monster than a straight CC machine I'd say.

As far as to go with the Trygon being T6, this doesn't really matter all that much if you look at the S of most weapons. T6/7 only effects S6/7 guns which when you look at most armies S6/7 is mostly non existant. Krak grenades, Autocannons are the only things that come to mind right off the bat. No way the Trygon would be T8 seeing as it's just the biggest hardest tanks that are T8. So objectively it being T6 over T7 is factored in so rarely that unless you're fighting a Guard opponent with nothing but Grenade launcher/Auto cannon teams you don't need to worry.

As far as the OP goes with the Mawloc, the Mawloc is an interesting beast as the role it performs and how it does it makes them hard to use. You have to pop up nxt to things to do Mortals but you have to not be near things to get away, and the base stats and Wargear for the Mawloc are really disappointing. What the Mawloc really has going for it is the cheap price and it can really hurt an enemy that tries to max out on 9" Deep strike denial but still keeping units in Aura range. There are some chances to do lots of damage when it pops up and to a lot of units, so even if it dies the points worth of damage it caused outweigh the cost of the creature itself.

What I'd recommend with the Mawloc is if you're taking it, look at giving it Murderous Size. That one change makes it go from garbage in CC to really good. Making those ScyTals it's armed with be a threat to hordes and Marines. If you're noticing it getting locked in CC you might as well make it be a blender while it's there.

If the Mawloc survived to lock something in combat - it's likley done a little more then normal

They ambush - hope to draw fire as a distraction - if not they charge something and hope to tie it up

Using the tunnelers to deliver a payload makes them ok.
Have not had a chance to use the new bio adaptions thanks to virus fun time lock down.

Marines just have too many tools to take medium tough monsters off the board.

Considering how many attacks certain marine characters can get on charges our monsters are hilariously under powered.

Every Tyranid organism is evolved to be killing machines.... most of them are inconvenience machines at best. (my poor sweet Haruspex)

I find it hilarious, that a random Marine or an Ork can have like 7 attacks on charge, but when our one-use-only monster has 7 attacks it's suddenly a fearsome beast.

5 attacks base, plus 1 on charge, hitting on 2's w/ re-roll of 1 and like 85 points before 10-ish on Wargear. Then there are the named characters.

Space marine Primaris captains with Thunder hammers (Or just Power fists IDK if they can take hammers like normal captains) Are basically mini cheap monsters that can hide and buff armies. Smash captains were just a marine players way of using them as a specialist unit but they can field cheap HQs that have similar damage outputs as our big beasties.

I'm tempted to do this with my small marine force now. Distraction Primaris captains. What a world we live in.

A little late but i think the trait for -1 ap on scything talons that wad menyioned was faq'ed to only work on normal ones (not massive, monstrous etc). Correct me if i am wrong.

Yes it is only normal ScyTals that get the AP -1, which is great because the Mawloc only has normal ones so he benefits from them unlike all other MCs

Who have ap-3 3 damage weapons?

Im not getting why thats a benefit, especially since he doesnt charge the turn he pops up, and most likely dies.
