Went to the ironman GT on Saturday. Because of the corona virus we only had about 18 players, so it was dropped to a 4 round RTT. When I walked in the room John Lennon, Richard Siegler, and Nick Nanavati were all there. The rest of the group was composed of brohammer, a couple of locals, and 3 from my regular play group. Talk about a tough group, That RTT is as good a field as most top 10s in most majors. As I've said earlier, my play time has been very limited as of late and I was NOT prepared for what I was about to endure.
Long story short. I lost all 4 games. Did the hive fleet proud with 0 wins! I still managed to average over 20 points in all my games, but my list simply ran out of steam.
Round 1 vs. Orks:
Ork usual suspect list plus 3 defdreads (which did nothing). I perilled a bunch in this game with psychic tests. I still managed to claw back in contention on turn 3 but failed to kill the last boy on my turn in 1 uni8t and he green tided on turn 6 to bring them all back. I was tabled on 5 and lost 21-30. I was feeling OK because I still scored 21 points and I was able to knock the rust off. This was my first game in over a month in a competition with the new ITC rules.
Round 2 vs. Tau:
Against a Siegler protege. Riptide wing. Had to go second and my choice was table quarters where I had zero ruins in either quarter or pointy hammer and anvil. I took pointy hammer and anvil. It was tied at the end of 3 but I failed to kill a second riptide and left him with 1 wound. I was out of CP and couldn't reroll the damage. I wound up getting tabled on 5 and lost 17-33.
Round 3 vs. Guard:
My best game. I simply could't get through his screen. I again went second and had the choice of pointy hammer and anvil again or vanguard. I chose vanguard. He killed all but 2 of my hive guard and my biovores. I failed to get a kill. This was the turn that lost me the game. I fought hard and kept the game even throughout. Both swarmy and the behemoth tyrant failed rerolled charges. The new tanks with tank ace are no joke. He had demolishers with 30" range and he simply pulverized me. I lost 22-23.
Round 4 vs. Tau:
A brohammer player. He's a great player. He's the one that gave me the worst beat down ever at my last GT with Tau. I was actually up 24-17 at the end of turn 4. He had the 8 (not a great list over all, but great against nids). He had 12 character body suits. I went first and traded units well. I was up 24-17 at the end of round 4. I lost 34-17. He tabled me at the bottom of round 4 and scored 17 points in the next 2 rounds.
Takeaways:
1. Only a single SM player at the event. There were 4 grey knight players and a lot Tau (6-7).
2. I don't get enough practice to play at this level.
3. Nids struggle to hang. I can do well up to around turn 4 when I just run out of steam.
4. I enjoyed all of my games. All my opponents were fantastic. A class act to a man. I'd go out for a drink with any and all.
5. It was a bit demoralizing and cut me down to size. I won several RTTs at this store over the past 2 years. I don't think I've regressed as a player, but not winning a single game is humbling.
6. Nid's still took second as Nick lost on the last round.
Sorry hive, I didn't represent well.
On a positive note, Nick forgot a couple of models and Siegler asked me if Nick could borrow some, it just so happened that I had the 2 models he was missing in my bag: a patriarch and broodlord. Not a ton of people can say the one of the best players in the world used their models. Hopefully his powerful mojo rubs off on my hive.
