Need help rethinking my Eldar

I didn't realize until recently how different my Eldar army can be in 8th because I haven't played one with them yet. For those that don't know, I run a Wraith list. Back in 7th, the only way I could get a full Wraith army (not including spirit seers), I had to use Forgeworld additions to the Craftworld Warhost. It got super expensive super fast. I needed a Wraithseer, 3 units of Blades, and then the Spirit Host detachment with 3 Wraithguard/blades, Wraithlord, a Knight, and then any other wraith construct detachments if I wanted more. It was a real mess.


Now, because of the spirit host required 3 units of blades/guard and the FW rules required 3 units of blades, I had this mindset that I always needed 3 units of blades and 3 units of guards. Obviously I don't need that anymore unless I'm going for a ton of Vanguard detachments. And now with the Iyanden Craftworld rule (cannot lose more than 1 model to failed morale and count wounds as double for damage chart) I can max out wraith units without worrying about morale so much.

So the big reason Im asking here and not in the Other Armies List section is because Im not asking for list crafting as in units, but instead as in detachments. Im unsure what to do here. Should I go for max squads because of the morale buff? Should I suck it up, get some Troops and make a Battalion for the CP? I have plenty of Elites for Vangaurds (blades, guards, bonesingers). Should worry about how many CP I have second to the army list itself? I know at the end of the day, play the army I want to play, but Im hoping for some different points of view.

That depends. Current strategems generally favor big units to get the biggest return. That said I run genestealers in units of 12 b/c that's how I find them to function the best for the points given. I haven't played wraiths enough to know where the sweet spot is. I'm not sure their damage output is high enough to warrant large units of them.

Eldar troops are vary playable and if you going for the morale boost craftworld then I think you need them. Both types of guardians are a strong choice.

Yes. Eldar really need the strategems to shine. I think you need 9 CP for Eldar and you aren't getting there with Vanguards.

I don't think the strength of Eldar is in their wraiths so take my advice with some salt. They just don't seem to do the elite thing as well as some other armies. Wave serpents might be the best vehicle in the game. Consider adding a few of those to your list.

This was exactly the sort POV I was looking for. Aim for 9 CP huh? I guess I could scrounge up some guardians or something. Doesnt fit my Craftworld's backstory, but functionality > narrative in my mind.

I feel that I would want a ton of Spirit Seers, at least just for getting a good range of psychic powers. I did think about a Farseer too, but 2 may be better. I did think why not 3 Vanguards and 2 Supreme Command Detachments. That would be 8CP without the need of troops. Problem is thats 9 HQs min. 9 - Wraithseer - 2 Farseer = 6 Spirit Seers. Thats a lot of Seer.

Game is hard.

I think the biggest thing to keep in mind with 8th ed eldar is that they are broken and no one enjoys playing against them....even with a tailored list, they are that un fun that the only time you play against them is at a tourney where some douche fanboy jizzes over his aspect cheeze or is a total wraith-tard....

Yeah sorry about that fella...my local elderp player either turns up with 3 wraithnights and 2 wraithlords or a butt ton of reapers and jetbikes in his 2k lists....kinda over it to the point i walk in to yhe flgs without my dolls to see if hes there first...didnt mean to offend if i did

What are you running against them? I honestly haven't had any issue dealing with Eldar this edition. I think there are far meaner lists out there: Mortarion with grenade bomb list, brims with the old malefic lords, Guilliman with anything, Guard gun lines, etc. It might be the player and not the army that is giving you such a bad taste on the army.

He was rocking 3 Detachments. @2,000

I'd suggest a squad of 10 wraithguard with cannons, Webway strike for 1 CP and split fire where appropriate to take out 1-2 units instantly.

Have some scythes and blades in waveserpents and have some spiritseers and farseers for buffs.

Bring a warlord autarch with wings to deepstrike with the guard and throw out a fusion gun shot for good measure.

With a vanguard and supreme command (maybe add the WK here) you should still have room for a battalion of rangers and seers. Rangers will work better for you as they won't be a focus of the list and will help to pick up objectives outside your deployment zone.

Kinda stinks that in order to get a good amount of CP I really need to use a Battalion. If only there were a way to make Guards/Blades troops like in older editions. First (Craft)world problems, am I right?

180 points of rangers and 2 seers isn't much tax for a battalion, thankfully.

...i don't understand your issue. Yes, to have adequate CP you are going to need multiple batallions or a brigade if possible.

^^ If I understand correctly his issue is that he doesn't like/doesnt want to use guardians, bikes or dire avengers so to take a battalion and get more CP he has to take units he doesn't like.
