Painting competition June/July

I base before I paint (unless there has been a mishap, poor planning, or twenty five changes of mind) and airbrush primer the whole thing.

If I do my basing later for w/e reason, I have an old piece of (please do not swear) wide brush I slather valejo primer onto the base. Sometimes I will seal it first with watered down PVA. Then I go back and paint it.

As I have recently found the glory of $4 flat grey Krylon primer (to hell with full retail primer!), I've been basing then spraying and liking it in general, though as stated above I still hit the base (sand in PVA) with an extra coat. I hadn't considered watering down the PVA for another coat, I'll try that later this week, thanks Giga.

I usually base after I've undercoated the model but before I start painting, as the drybrush stage tends to catch the model's ankles.

For the texture, I mix sand and iron filings together - the iron filings is partly to weigh down the base slightly and partly because it's finer grade than the sand I have - the sand itself is actually crushed mortar from some bricks I had lying around in the garden which gives a nice range of sizes from powder to small stones. If I want a bit of height, I have some 2mm cork which I break into pieces and glue on before the sand stage.

I mix it with a generous dollop of white glue and slop it on with an old brush. Once it's dry I go over it with matte varnish to seal it and stop the water in the paint dissolving the glue.

Then I paint it all with a mid-grey and add a Nuln Oil wash, before drybrushing the base first with the mid-grey again then progressively lighter shades.

I usually finish it with some static grass by painting some blobs of white glue then placing the whole model up to the knees in the bag of grass - this seems to give a more 'vertical' grass than just sprinkling it on. I also use a few grass tufts which I bought pre-glued onto adhesive pads.

Some progress: camo base and some colour detail coming now. I'm using blue and red flashes to echo the scheme on my stealer carapaces. Still not sure if this is going to work out, but I'm going to stick with it until it's done and see how it turns out:

It's terrible to assemble but really fun to paint. I painted mine a couple weeks ago but didn't take a primed photo -.-

Edit: posted my finished 'phant in a different thread. Taking him to a tournament Saturday.

I saw a thing on facebook this morning, where someone had put four or five twisted wires into the torso and supported/joined it to the base using those, then made them look like lash-whips.

I'm honestly torn if I want to put him on a base or not. With a base he's completely impractical to play games with as his base would make it that much harder to fit him places. Though it would look cool.

I've opted for no base for now and braced his legs by cutting them at major joints and inserting rods for support. I've heard all the stories about how his body's weight is just too much for the limbs

Looks better without a base, imo. Rods are the way to go
