On the SM front: Styrene, or thin foam core board, might work. Foam core is a little less expensive but is also easier to bend.
As for nids, I made a few cheapo spore pods before they took them out of the book. Now that we have them back in a different form, I've made some updated versions. Unfortunately I'm a few days away from home and on a limited internet connection. I can't access my photobucket to show much but this is what's on my laptop to reference. May I present: cheap.
The carapace is made from a paper meche egg found at a craft store. The base is a 4"/100mm cork circle hot-glued to a cardboard cutout reinforced with thin strips of wood (I wanted the right size base and just used what was lying about). There's a 9" dowel rod jammed through the base and hot-glued into spot to form the stalk. After that it's just a matter of shoving some wire and paperclips into the shell to make a frame and coat the whole thing in expanding foam. I did the stalk and spore separately, then cleared off the top 3" or so of the stick and jammed it into the foam. Trust me, it helps with transporting something that size. The whole thing might have totaled out to $20 for the set with some supplies left over.
I'll try to get some better picks up when I'm home next week. I've been needing to update some of my projects anyway.
