Nope. You need to inflict a casualty before Assimilate kicks in, so it wouldn't have helped unless your HT killed a model before the challenge. Yeah, it kind of sucks for 10 points compared to the late Old Adversary 6" PE bubble.
Don't get me wrong, I totally understand that the initiative buff from BS/LW, not to mention with the ID, makes them a superior to RC against characters/MCs, but at least with RC, my Flyrant is capable of penetrating AV14 if needed.
Against standard I4 units, the OA/RC option should certainly outperform LW/BS. In any event, Reaper is the best option, and can also glance AV14 on the charge. Hmmm.
EDIT - important distinction. OA allows re-rolls in close combat only. Maw-Claws gives PE to the HT, which would then allow it to also enjoy re-rolls with it's ranged weapons (Devourer+Grubs in my case) too.
I'm a big believer that when you see something new, you should put thought into why it's good, not what it's lacking.
With that in mind, I have a few questions;
Is this a Melyrant or a hybrid? The devourers are best used when swooping, where your defense is the fact that you have to be snap fired at. This also means you can't assault without sacrificing a turn.
A Melyrant uses 2+ jink for his defense, which means he can only snapfire. This (to me) makes the Devourers wasted points that also cost you a H2H attack. When spending 55+ points on melee upgrades, you want as many attacks as possible (especially with OA).
While RC do allow you to scratch AV14, either variant of a flyrant is wasting a turn trying to fish for 6s when it could be murdering a centstar. I seriously ask you to find a different unit to deal with AV14 than this monster, or you'll continue to be disappointed.
Remember that you can expect 6 turns of play. Do you expect to get performance out of this both from shooting, and H2H? Turn 1 you move and shoot. Turn 2 you assault. Turn 3 you are either still fighting, or getting counter charged. If/when you get out of combat, will you be looking to dive back in, or fly around shooting things?
I think if you're interested in trying out this model, trade the Devourers for the LWBS and drop the RC. Or better yet, run 1 of each and see how they compare.
Really I'm just not sold on the hybrid. I think by trying to be good at everything it gets worse. If you have some evidence to the contrary, or would just explain your thought process behind your setup/ it's ideal role in your play I would love to hear it.
I beg you to try the 250 setup though, do the rolls vs your buddy's blood angel squad/warlord, and see how you feel about the LWBS/OA combo then.
