Greetings, all!
I'm kinda new here. Just registered, despite that fact that I've been lurking for a few months.
I figured I'd introduce myself by posting some pics of a project I've been working on for the past month or so. Per the subject of the thread, this is my kitbashed Dominatrix. A little background: I have a personal fascination with the "lost" tyranid creatures. Things like the Dominatrix, Haruspex, Malefactor, and other Epic 40K beasties intrigue me because I want to see how they could be redesigned to fit the modern post-3rd / 4th edition bioform aesthetic of our beloved hive fleets. I've seen the popular pieces of art floating around the net, and I've even drooled over many of the conversions out there. They inspired me to do one of my own.
However, I wanted to make mine out of off-the-shelf parts. Basically, I wanted to use current tyranid model bits as much as possible so I could keep a consistent look and feel. That's one of the things that made me go down the path that I did with this project. I started the prototype almost two years ago, before I caught wind of any recent rumors of the possibility of an official 6th edition WH40K Dominatrix. Happy with the basic form of the prototype, but dissatisfied with how short-sighted I was in assembly, I decided to start anew and do it "right." This is what you'll see below.
In friendly games, the intent is to use some of the custom rulesets already out there. In more strict games, I plan to field this gal as a Tervigon or Tyrannofex, depending.
First up, a shot of one of my work areas. In the upper left corner you can see the headless version of the prototype. In the center, you can see the basic body with separate bits pre-assembled on the mat.
Here's a close up of the Dominatrix a few weeks ago. The models used thus far include: Tervigon, Trygon, Carnifex, and Zoanthrope. The Dominatrix, as many of you know, is a composite creature. It's two tyranids fused together. The biggest of the two is basically the "mount." The "rider" is the one protruding from the top, and is generally considered to be the psyker. So I figured going with the exposed brainstuffs of the zoanthrope would be a good starting point.
I magnetized the rupture cannon / biocannon. This pic also shows a bit more greenstuff work that I did to fuse the canifex torso with the tervigon body, and the nearly complete head carapace.
Finally, a closeup of the mouth to show one of our beloved termies stepping out to say "hi!" Yeah, I figured this ol' lady would both consume and birth from the same mouth. Seems suitably nasty / tyrannidy to me.
Because she's two tyranids fused together, I'm giving her four pairs of lower limbs: two fixed rear legs and two magnetized forward weapon arms. The upper body arms are fused into the big cannon, which has been magnetized more for the sake of transport than customizabilty.
I've still got a long way to go with her, but thoughts and comments would be welcome!
