If the Hive Tyrant Couldn't Take Any Devourers..?

What would you use for your HQ? What would people turn to?

Would we see more armoured shell footrants and CC flyrants, or would the prime or tervigon become the HQ of choice? How about the swarmlord?

EDIT: The thread title is meant to say 'If the Hive Tyrant Couldn't Take Devourers..?' without the quad bit. So one set of devourers isn't an option

I think the biggest difference would be that more people would stick with the Codex Psychic powers. One of their biggest drawbacks is that they're Shooting Attacks, so they can't be used in the same Turn that you fire both sets of Devs.

For 6th Ed, tho, I think the Devourer Tyrant would still be the go-to option.

If I couldn't take the dakkarant than I'd be taking the swarmlord. It's not a bad support unit.

Since I don't run the Dakkarant now, I would have to say either Flyrant with heavy venom cannon and lashwhip/bonesword or tyranid prime as I run both currently.

i'd take my prime so i can squeeze points out and take other good stuff

flyrant with devourers and whip/sword if double devourers is not an option. stranglethorn + devourers also an option; can still vector strike + devourer on other flyers while maintaining flexibility to pile wounds onto infantry. i can't see codex powers really ever as it stands now. iron arm/endurance/enfeeble are simply too good.

Swarmy. Definitely swarmy. Tyrant vector strikes aren't good enough anti air to warrant his cost so i would cut my losses and focus on the ground game. The swarmlord is one of our best force multipliers. Possibly make a swarmstar with a guard and prime.

i think OP meant if you couldnt' take both sets of devourers (i.e. X2 BL devourers). one set + vector is still pretty decent. that's still 6 TL S6 shots + d3+1 S6 hits. not counting OA, you should average 9 hits with X2 BL devourers, and 7ish(i think?) hits with one set of devourers + VS.

Yeah, if he meant we could still take one pair, I'd still take two flyrants. Probably with scything talons.

If I had to play with a some kind of Tyrant, then Swarmlord. CC Tyrants suck and other shooty options range from mediocre to bad, so the Swarmlord is the only alternative since he is actually properly built for CC.

Oh that's right we do still have other options don't we? Swarmlord or Dual Brainleech Flyrant are the only two options I see. Maybe Prime but even then I don't like it being my Warlord.. Pretty soft considering the other options. Tervigon is only ever a HQ at 500 points etc, more beneficial to be Troop. Parawha??

Without access to devourers, I really don't think I would run a HT.

I would probably run a Parasite, and sometimes a Slord/Prime/Tguard
