Cover for Flying Monstrous Creatures?

During swoop mode, can FMCs get cover? I think I may have read this somewhere but I wanted to check...

Yes they can get cover, either from abilites like the venomthrope, terrain or models and of course jink.

Is this written in the rule book somewhere? Or is it simply that it doesn't say they can't get a save from cover?

They get cover like any other unit. People assume they are "flying" and somehow everything can see them, which is incorrect.

The false assumption that they do not get cover comes from the old apocalypse flyer rules. Flyers in apocalypse were supposed to be well above the battle and beyond the effects of anything that might give them cover on the board. Those rules did not carry over into 6th edition and unless there is something explicitly stating that flyers and FMCs do not get cover then they follow the same cover rules as all other unit types. And there is no such rule in the book.

Good to know. My last game with nids this came up - whether a FMC could hide behind a building for a cover save vs the view that the flyers and FMC were so high up that they could see each other. My opponent indicated that this was how others had played it at the local store (that flyers/FMC are high up so no cover) - it seemed weird to me but I hadn't used my flyrant for a while and I didn't want to waste a lot of time looking for rules so I said fine.

it went along with the old "weapon ranges are reduced by 12" when shooting at flyers" rule from Apoc. Without thinking I applied it to a game the other day. Then I was very happy afterwards when I realized my mistake!

Ive had this done to me, people ive played with have claimed my flyrant is 'above the ruin' rather than behind it so they can deny me cover

have them show you in the rulebook why they don't get cover. they won't be able to.

My opponents have been arguing that I shouldn't get cover from area terrain for my dakka flyrant. I showed asked them to show me the rule where it states otherwise and they admit to that. However, they are arguing that my flyrant (which is normal tyrant with dragon wings) should be raised to the height of a flyer since it is flying. Should I argue WYSIWYG and because it's on the ground that's its true height?

There is no rule in the rulebook that states a model that is flying must be on a raised base. The Flying Daemon prince isn't any higher than a walking on so he still gets cover, the Flying tyrant just has the unfortunate circumstance to be a very tall model so it is rarely behind cover, but you don't have you use the flying legs, you can always use the walking legs and give him wings.

Yes WYSIWYG is applied. You wouldn't tell a Space Marine player to model assault marines 6" off the ground since they use jump packs, so why should you have to?

Regardless of how he is mounted, he would get cover saves from area terrain, though I do think there is a bit of modeling for advantage if you put him on the walking legs and expect him to get cover like a walking tyrant. The best way around that is to have the dimensions of the flyrant handy and show them how tall it would be if he were using the flyrant legs/tail. If he would still get cover at that height, you are good.

Also, do wings actually count towards being able to see a model? I've been told they don't...

I've thought about this and decided not to claim cover from the board while a FMC is swooping. It can't really be justified having a hive tyrant in the air flying at the same time as claiming a cover save from a tank on the ground, or some ruins it is flying over. I think it's a bit too far and even strikes me as a bit unsporting to be taking those saves

On the other hand if it is moving like jump infantry then that's another matter since they're assumed to be landing at the end of every turn before taking off again next time they move

Fair enough in a friendly game, if you're in a tournament then you're handicapping yourself unfairly and unnecessarily.
