Kill Teams and Instinctive Behavior

I'm in prep phase for an end-of-month Kill Teams tournament. Many thanks to those who responded to my post about Kill Team make up.

I have a question about Instinctive Behavior. I understand that in Kill Teams matches all models operate as independent units of one. This allows players greater flexibility in tactically moving their models, securing and contesting objectives, etc. That's fine for all armies that don't have to worry about Instinctive Behavior. But for us, where synapse creatures are pricey, the options aer limitted in terms of fielding adequate synapse plus any amount of firepower or wounds.

So, does instinctive behavior still apply in Kill Teams? If I break a brood of Rippers up into teams of three bases, do they have to take IB tests once they move outside of a Zoanthrope's synapse range?

If IB is no longer an issue that increases flexibility in terms of unit choices. I could even consider fielding a pyrovore (taking advantage of the Specialist abilities to increase its durability). If IB remains an issue than the list gets pared down to zoans, warriors, and ymgarls/stealers. Which means a low model count, low wound count, and horrible ranged weapon outpout. Not to mention lack of ability to cover multiple objectives/firing points.

So, does IB still apply?

I would discuss with your tournament organizer if it applies or not. For example in the kill teams and tournaments at my LGS instinctive behavior doesn't apply, however I usually field bonesword+deathspitter warriors so it doesn't apply to me anyways.

Even with IB you could still field a Pyrovore It has IB-Feed and a special rule that it can fire at your will when affected by IB, so there is no problem at all.

What makes Pyros such a competitive choice in Kill Team games?
I bought some models for vanilla games but they seemed like such a waste of an Elite slot that I ended up selling them.
Something about the KT rules make them a good choice?

I'm guessing it's the ability to give them USRs.

Man, I'm glad I read this thread. Kill team is something we do from time to time and I never thought of using a pyro there. FINALLY, a good use of the model!

Nothing in the rules for KT removes the need for Synapse or IB tests. Some places house rules this, but I think it's weird to benefit one army like that.

I've always played KT with standard synapse rules. It's not too bad from my experience.

I figured IB and Synapse couldn't be overlooked. It does require some extra list planning. Whereas most opponents could spread their forces out fairly wide in small teams or individually, you can't necessarily do that with our non-synapse units or you'll run the risk of individual models Lurking or charging at the wrong time. If you run an all-non synapse list you might find yourself at the end of the game with all remaining models refusing to leave cover to secure or contest the central objective.

How do you overcome that with a low/no synapse combination? For example, I know one IG player is bringing:

Two Scout Sentinals
10 x Veterans in a base Chimera

How do you combat that with low/no synapse and minimize the risk of key units rebelling against the hive mind?

IB: Feed out of Synapse gets a boost now with Rage just adding an attack, it won't force you to charge. Granted, you loose fearless, but it's individual models, so it should be ok.

Personally, I use KT games to tale the fight behind he Nid lines, like so:

2x Pyrovore
3x Rippers v/ Spineftsts
3x Sky Slashers w/ Spinefists.

you can use the speed of the flyers, to get rear on the tank an glance it with ridiculous numbers of shots, same with the walkers, use the Pyrovores to smash it, while using the Rippers to shoot them. Glaning is awesome!

Models with IB - Feed cannot shoot during the shooting phase. Aren't rippers w/ Spinefists a risky proposition?

ya, I guess so. I debated adding TS instead, but it meant changing it to:

2x Hive Guard - 100
3x Rippers w/ TS - 42
3x Sky Slashers w/ TS - 57

total: 199

Gives you some ranged shooting, and makes the IB: feed less for an issue, but you loose so much shooting power. I'd risk the IB tests and take my other list. Since the tests are on a model by model basis. or I could drop the TS and add an extra ripper and sky slasher, which would give me 10 models, so I'd need to loose 5 to start making Break Tests.
