Lictors, going to ground and fearless

Ok, I just thought of something which could make me want to use lictors again. But I want to know if this is legit, if this is really how the rules are working.

Let say you have a squad of lictors in reserve and another synapse unit in reserve too, like a Trygon prime.

Let say both arrive on turn 2 (which iis likely thanks to Hive commander).

You put the lictors in area terrain, close to the enemy, more than 12 inch from the trygon prime. Since the have shrouded, they then have a 3+ cover save. When the enemy shoot at them, you can then go to ground and get a 2+ cover save. Which gives them a decent chance of surviving.

Next turn, you start by moving the trygon within 12 inch of the lictors. Which cause them to get up instantly and then they can act as normal rigth away. So you could then proceed and charge the enemy with the lictors on turn 3.

Is it true? Or I am misunderstanding the new way fearless interact with gone to ground?

From what i understand there is two sides, some think you can indeed do that and others think you must becomes fearless before the actual movement phase, this would require using dominion from the tervigon to hit them with synapse before the actual movement phase starts. I feel just moving should be sufficient since they become fearless immediately upon entering synapse.

Since the wording states that the "effects of Go to Ground [are] immediately cancelled" as long as you make the unit fearless before that unit's movement you can move them as normal, the following sentence on parenthesis is an example of cancelling their effects, not a statement saying that it has to be at the beginning of the phase.

Yeah, virtualsniper, that is a good way of protecting an expensive and substandard unit, but why go through the trouble? Wouldn't you rather have your Trygon Prime close to the enemy?

That sounds accurate and they are leadership 10 so they will probably pass whatever morale checks they are forced to take.

If you want to field Lictors, this sounds like a workable strategy for them.

Without getting into the particulars of the thread topic... this is a nonsensical statement. There is no 'before the movement phase'. Once it is your turn, the movement phase has begun.



As for the OP, that seems to be what the FAQ is saying, it doesn't say you rally, just that the effects are "immediately cancelled" It even gives the example of becoming fearless during the movement phase, and still being able to move.

This will work but for the record...

Lictors have stealth, not shrouded, so need to use area terrain or ruins to achieve 2+, rather than being able to do so behind say an intervening unit.

My bad, it is only the deathleaper that has the shrouded special rules given in the faq.

But it still works as, like you said, area terrain give +2 cover.

Make sure that your opponent doesn't have Ignore Cover weapons that will ruin your plan.

There's a Genestealer tactic discussion regarding this exact same issue - stealers can infiltrate, go to ground, and the next turn a Tervigon either walks up... or casts Dominion. (And if you somehow roll a double 6 Perils you can still walk I believe) Since Dominion gives the Tervi an 18" Synapse range BEFORE instinctive behaviour is rolled, you've already got an advantage there - your Psykers (for Broodlords) can begin casting spells immediately.

So yes, Lictors using this would also work. Just be careful who you target...

I just thought of something, I wonder if this can somehow superseded the no charge when deep striking rule

Well the original was because of the fearless making them no longer gone to ground, they had said that the rules say ( i do not have them handy at the moment) they can charge now. I do not know if they rule they mention pertains to go to ground specifically or if it literally says they can charge by becoming fearless. If the latter is the case then maybe you can use it as a loophole on how it is written. If you could charge when you had become fearless then maybe it would overlap the rule saying you cannot charge after you deep strike.I could however be reading way to much into it or having no clue what so ever as to what is being said.

you still haven't gotten around the 'you can't assault after coming in from reserves' rule.

Well you cant assault if you went to ground....

even if you're suddenly fearless that doesn't give you permission to charge the turn you come in from reserves.

let me be more specific: it's not that they can't charge because they've gone to ground. they can't charge the turn they come in from reserves because the BRB says you can't. going to ground, becoming fearless and having the gone to ground effect canceled still does not give you permission to charge the turn you come in from reserve. could you charge if the unit hadn't come in from reserve that turn? yes, of course. that's not what we're dealing with here though.
