Need Advice: Mangetising hive tyrant/swarmlord

Easy solution: Buy a new Tyranid body + pelvis off-of a bits site and you don't even need to worry about magnets.

For wings I'm just planning to cut in a bit to the arm bit and stick a socket there, and a mangnet in that. Not sure if it will work, and I know I'll need stronger magnets for the wings. Anyone done this and got images or tips?

you don't need two hip pieces. the one they provide can slot into the pelvis of the flying and walking legs fine with the support of a magnet.

For the wings, i did use pieces of rod however to keep the wings upright in addition to a magnet.




I havnt magnetised the swarmlord head and arms yet though.

i just built a new midsection for mine, but that works too.

I wouldn't worry too much about swapping/ magnetizing the heads/ lower torsos. If you magnetize and model it as a walking tyrant and put four swords on it it's swarmlord, change the arms to wings and devourers and it's a dakka flyrant.

the large profile on the wings make it really awkward to move around the board when it's on the walkrant legs.

I love my grounded flyrants so much I just recently ripped a painted flying tail model in half to put him on a set of grounded legs.

I have my flyrant on grounded legs as well, partly because its an old tyrant in metal from before the current kit. interesting enough its exactly the same sculpt as the new one (if on the ground).

what I did was getting a 5 mm X 5 mm into the torso socket, so that it replaced the plastic and retained the socket shape.
having brought wings on ebay I noted the angle and drilled a 5 mm X 5 mm into the wing stub. The stub is less than 5 mm in width for the tip so the magnet got a bit deeper in than the plastic it replaced. (proberly I drilled to far but it didnt matter in the end.)

After that I put plastic glue on the magnets against wear and thought I might have to do a pin as well. as it turned out the wings held fine with just the magnets. The wing is made so the end, towards the torso, touches the torso and lend it support (and a bigger surface to glue if you did that.) I can still make a pin in the wing above the stub and into the torso.
Mind that the wings are designed to hold best in a certain pose and capitalizing on that strengthens the parts bond.

Another tip to use after having done as above, would be to glue the magnets together but not letting it it settle and instead continuesly sticking it together and taking it apart. The idea is to create a gritty surface for the magnets that keep it from sliding around. (explaination is a bit messy I hope you get it)

I would add that magnets doesnt increase in strength in stacking by more than the magnets width. so a 5 X 8 is as strong as a 5 X 5 magnet. I dont know exactly why but the website I used for magnets state their magnetism and I tried it myself.

I can take a picture of my tyrant if you wish but its not so different from what is already in the thread.

I use supermagnete.de for magnets. they claim to be the strongest in the world but im not sure if its the same as everyone else.
