My army are called Hive Fleet Tiaowulong. It's a Chinese translation of a cool name I got from a computer game- dancing dragon (I wonder if anyone knows where that came from?). The idea is the first humans to encounter my fleet sighted, and were attacked by, huge dragon-like (oriental style dragon) creatures (mawlocs). It sort of fits my colour scheme too- all of my tyranids have jade carapaces.
To be honest I consider the name some humans give my nids to be of minimal importance. Humans, Eldar, Tau, Orks etc. can call them whatever they like for all I care, the names have no real meaning

Hive Fleet Ouroboros for me. Originally fluffed to be the FIRST Hive Fleet to be encountered by the Imperium, in a battle with the Emperor himself as the Fleet emerged from the Eye of Terror only to retreat back into the Warp, I think. Later retconned to be later on after the Heresy but still way before Hive Fleet Behemoth. I like the idea of a Warp mutated Hive Fleet/Splinter Fleet that got engulfed by a Warp storm and trapped there outside of the range of the Hive Mind. They could have been there for thousands of years for all we know and were horribly twisted. Once released back into realspace they would default on their synapse but the damage is done.
To reflect this I used the Behemoth scheme with my own take on it. Wet dark red flesh, ashen black carapace, metallic teeth and claws, and florescent green eyes.

Mine is Hive Fleet Draconis, though I originally spelled it Draconus. Regardless, kinda just made up the name and went with it. On some old computer somewhere is a word file with the biomorphs unique to the fleet courtesy of the rules in the back of the 3rd ed codex.

My fleet is named Hive Fleet Deathblade. The reason the imperial forces gave my fleet the name, was because i'm always fielding bonesword warriors, killing everything! So deathblade ._.

Mine is Hive Fleet Lyngbakr, a Kraken splinter fleet. Lyngbakr is a giant whale from icelandic mythology that arose from tales of sinking islands.

I took the name "Scarabus". I didn't see anyone using it, although the wiki says it appears in the fluff of one of the IG codex books. I'm not surprised no one is keen to use it, considering the whole fleet was apparently wiped out without major imperial losses I think there are 2 really good ideas within this thread... 1) Maybe we need a sticky post of a thread that lists all the Hive fleet names that have been taken (and taken how many times). Maybe even with usernames of the members, if so inclined. It might help generate ideas or solve the question of "does anyone on the Hive have this name already?" 2) Maybe we need to sticky a post that has lots of reference and idea material on how to come up with hive fleet names. For me, i feel there are a few ways to go about it: 1) Making a name that sounds canon, and thus fits the naming theme. 2) Coming up with a name that semi-sounds like it'd fit, but doesn't when looked at closely. Still, there's only so many ancient mystical creatures you can use... 3) Pick anything that appeals to you... Hive Fleet: Matrix, Tardis, Derpyhooves, waterbottle, blowfish, 42, hellblazers, blueflames, etc, etc.

Back when I started collecting 'a few models just to paint' and dismissed the game as being too geeky for me to even consider learning it I went with 'Hive Fleet Platypus' as a bit of a tongue-in-cheek thing, and it sort of stuck.
Now I'm playing games practically every week, fielding anything up to 10K and a Bio-Titan and still haven't shrugged the name.
In my defense though, the Platypus is REALLY weird; a tail and fur similar to a beaver, a beak and webbed feet like a duck, poisonous barbs on its heel, it lays eggs like a chicken but nurses its young with milk. It has an electrosensitive beak and five times the sex chromosomes of a human.
It's like it was made out of the universe's bits box.

Hive fleet Irkalla. It's Sumerian or Babylonian for the great Void or Nothingness. Because you know, Nids come from beyond the intergalactic void. (and also it's what's left off my army after fighting DE )

Fun facts: When the first platypus discovered was brought back to England (stuffed of course) they thought it was stitched-together hoax. Only males have the poisonous barbs on their hind legs, while it's not lethal to humans, the pain from being stung can last for months. Their legs are on the side of their body, rather than beneath, like a reptile's. They ingest rocks to help grind up food in their stomach. They have long nails which they use to dig burrows, one for living in, and one to hatch their young. And they cover up their eyes and ears while swimming, using their beak to detect faint electrical signals to navigate and find prey. - An Aussie zoology student Also, That's a fantastic name Laneseed.

It's not only the males who got the poison, females too. BUT! They don't use them, they don't have the ability to use them, but has them ._. Dunno how nor why ...

You forgot mine - Hive Fleet Illithid Got it. I know I'm missing some of the GW canon fleets too, along with some pretty well known ones on here. Definitely call me out on ones I've missed.
