The most epic Tyranid close combat

Have you ever had a close combat that was truly epic? One that was so memorable, yet horrifying? I have one and I'd like to share it.! ;D


I was fighting gray knights that had 2 death stars at 2500 points in 5th edition.

Turn 1 he moved up his 2 death stars in 2 land raiders.

I tried killing his land raiders with 2 tyrannofexes, but he got out and killed them with one of his death stars. My plan then came into play.

Knowing that I had a very strong close combat army that couldn't use units 1 on 1, I decided to assault him with not 2, not 3, not even 4, but rather my whole army of a brood of 30 hormagaunts with AG and TS, 2 broods of 20 termagants with AG and TS, a trygon and a hive tyrant with 3 tyrant guard.

Even after shooting him and putting paroxysm on the unit, I still didn't kill it. He then assaulted with his other death star. Models started to drop and we couldn't help but lose track of turns and keep the slaughter going.

At around turn 7 or maybe 8 (I don't even know) I asked "Hey wait..... what turn is it? ". We decided to end it the next turn after that. He won with 1 squad on an objective that I couldn't kill with my genestealers.

At the end of the combat there was 1 terminator (that was a paladin. Don't worry, we continued the combat for the giggles and I killed him of), while I had a trygon with 3(?) wounds and around 5 or so hormagaunts.

A true blood bath and my most epic combat ever. ;D


Anyone else have any epic combats (of any sort)?

Against an Ork player, he tried to Defrolla the Spore that just dropped the Doom in it. DoG from the spore (this was 5th edition, so S + 2d6 armor pen) blew up the battlewagon, and the crew gets out. Half the nobz die from the explosion, 2 more die from Doom's spirit leech. He charges his warboss into the Doom and is unable to kill it (made something like 4 3+ inv saves).

My turn, Doom instakills his warboss.

That was my most memorable combat feat in recent memory.

Against a demon army a great, a great unclean one charged a single zoanthrope.

This loner zoanthrope (who i now call Phil) survived till the end of the game. Six assault phases of getting smacked around by the gigantic monstrosity and never receiving a scratch.

Two Devilgants, within 6" of a TS/AG Tervigon get assaulted by a DE Talos Pain Engine: They overwatch and roll 2 6's, then roll another 6 to wound, and he fails his 3+ armor save taking a wound. He then charges in (through terrain). He needed a 9 to reach me and rolled three 6s, dropping the highest, to make the assault. I roll for Counter Attack, using the Tervigon's leadership and make it. I strike with 4 attacks, hitting all 4, wounding on 4's because of toxin sacs. He fails 2 saves and dies.

Lesson Learned: Don't mess with Devilgants!

Against orcs, charged 8 nobs and Ghazghkull with 24 hormagaunts with toxin sacs and adrendal glands. At the end of the turn 15 hormagaunts were left on my side, while only a badly wounded Ghazghkull was left for the orcs, who promptly ran, and was chased down.

At a tournament on Saturday. 2 Ymgarl genestealers charge a necron squad of 10 Immortals with attached Lord with res orb. Genestealers cause 2 wounds, Necrons 1. They fail their morale and get swept by the solo Ymgarl.

A apoc game about a year ago. My doom got MVP that game by killing 17ish termies. mid way into the match he found himself in melee with 5 of them and took 13 str 8 wounds. He passed every save and all the termies died during the following shooting phase, souls sucked dry.

For Tyranid combat, I would say that the most epic combat would be 30 hormagaunts get tarpitted by 50 conscripts.

I had a similar, yet less epic combat.

5 terminators charge 2 zoanthropes. 2 attacks, both hit both wound 2 failed 2+ armor saves. Too bad the zoanthropes died the 2nd round of combat.

Full seer council vs a 1 wound obliterator. 63 saves later he fails one.

I've spent too much time playing against a Tau buddy of mine to have many. There was a particularly fun game in 5th edition one time though where we were on the third or fourth turn. It was an objective game and he's managed to kill all of my troops (I had a couple of warriors but they were locked in combat with a Crisis suit commander on top of an objective, and because I had decided against bone swords for them I was failing to crack a 2+ armour save so no one was getting that objective), while he had two groups of fire warriors on an objective across the board. The only unit I had left that stood a chance of at least getting close enough to contest and tie the game was a Swarmlord with two Tyrant Guard, so I immediately sent them straight at it hoping to get their before the game ended. He was desperately trying to hold them off long enough to win, but I was shrugging off shots with little problem, so he threw the Crisis suits he had left in my path and would charge with them to try and tarpit me. It was quite hilarious because he'd charge, Swarmy would go first and bat them aside and I'd keep moving the next turn unimpeded.

This went on for two turns or so. I only needed one more turn to get close enough to contest but we rolled for the game end and he got it just in the nick of time. But something about the image of this Close Combat Monster charging across the field, cutting his way through Crisis suits and shrugging off Tau gunlines just made the whole thing seem so cool.

---BACK IN 5TH EDITION--

I was playing against a Chaos Space Marine fella who had a full decked out unit of Khorn Bezerkers about to tear a new one into my backfeild hiveguard, tervigon, ect. BUT... I had about 5 warriors and a prime standing in thier path.... So I charge him with the full unit of warriors lowering thier initiative w/ my lashwhip (Prime). At the same time I had 2 9 man broods of genestealers outflank and charge him as well. He was wiped out before fighting back and it was GREAT!

I have two very memorable moments from tyranid close combat. The first happened in 4th edition when I infiltrated 6 genestealers 18" from a space marine players scouts. I had first turn and I moved 6" normal then rolled a 6 for run, 6 for difficult terrain test on the charge, and whiped out an entire squad of scouts. I was a new player then and that got me hooked. Also, killing a whirlwind with a venom cannon first turn on the same game was extra added bonus.
Second, happened during 5th edition. There were 3 of us so we had to do a 2 on 1. It was two space marine players vs me (Tyranid player) and one of them fielded a dreadnought army with master of the forge. Yeah, dreadnoughts in 5th edition was a pain. Anyway, on my second turn I outflanked 12 genestealers with a broodlord and they had full upgrades (toxin sacs, adrenal glands, scything talons). It was a 2750 point game and I had to purchase lots of upgrades to get to that point value. Those genestealers got to assault a squad of 5 terminators with a librarian and from all those re-rolls from scything talons and toxin sacs, I rolled 27 RENDS!!!!! Do the math . With 5th editions wound shenanigans his librarian survived with 1 wound. That was a mistake. Luckily for me those genestealers couldn't get shot at next turn and there was a devestator squad and a scout squad nearby to munch on after I was finished with their librarian on their turn. They conceded on turn 3.

In an apocalypse match a couple months ago I had five Warriors from thee Eye of the Hive formation get charged Mephistion. At this point I was not worried since my warriors currently had feel no pain and dual bone-swords. But immediately after came a squad of six necron wraiths. To my surprise they stuck it out long enough for my hive tyrant to get there four turns later. Then the warriors grabbed an objective and my side won.

my most epic tyranid combat was moving my flyrant forward to drown a BT marshal and his squad in brain-leech goodness, and forgetting that there were a full squad of TH/SS terminators in the ruin next to them. the termies were primered black, and so is the surface of my gaming table.

next turn that flyrant ate a metric butt-ton of righteous flaming thunderhammer death. i don't think he even killed any in return, though memory is foggy.
