Deepstriking the Swarmlord. . .

anyway, I was checking the new psychic powers in the main rule book and considered what I'd like to swap out out tyrant powers for, now the normal tyrant can only have two as it states to select only two, the swarmlord automatically comes with 4.

Now, under the telekinesis it has " Gate of Infinity", Now if I devote 4 dice rolls into trying to get that ability.

I could potenially deepstrike swarmlord with 3x Guard and 1 Prime into the heart of the enemy lines then fire off one of the witchfire if im lucky to get one; next turn charge.

No more foot slogging.

what's your thoughts?

Could work, but you would want some more units appearing along side them too.

Maybe some Podding Fex's, Devil gaunts in pod or even Gargoyles / Raveners....

Create so many target priorities that it will not matter what they do, they will be overwhelmed.

Cool idea. I don't have much experience playing the swarmlord but if he manages to assault turn 3, which is likely, via dead hive guard then it could definitely give the opponent a very bad time. Wouldn't that also be game ending? Again I haven't tried podding very much.

Well, the only major flaw in that plan is the chance of one of your attached units being lost in the warp... or a deep strike mishap. And I've seen it tried before - it's quite scary, although depending on the opponent's firepower you're also likely to feed them a Slay the Warlord victory point. Use with caution, but quite the psychological attack.

I don't like the idea of a deepstriking Swarmlord deathstar. It adds a lot of random to your army and the Swarmlord is probably not at his best in the middle of the enemy army, struggling to survive scatter, struggling to get cover saves, having ignorable impact the turn the lands, and adding little buffs to the rest of your army.

The way I see it, isn't to DS into the center of the enemy, but just to get their a bit quicker.
Turn 1 you can move 6". If instead you DS 15" closer... that is a big increase. You can go straight forward, or off on a flank, or wherever.

This also allows a turn 2 charge. DS 15" forward, Run d6. Turn 2, Move 6", Assault 2d6".

Now that's an Alpha Strike List... Make the Flyrant the Warlord to improve his chances to live. Hive Commander gives redundancy on Reserve rolls and counters Warlord traits, Master of the Fleet and such, and allows you to Outflank one of the Tervigons/Termagants if necessary.

I'm rolling on telekinesis for this very reason in my next game. The way I look at it is you also have a good shot at telekine dome as well, plus endurance from a Tervigon. In other words, load him up on defensive buffs then slingshot him forward. If you're lucky and get gate early in your rolls you can go to biomancy and hope for endurance or iron arm. I've been running swarmlord with a solo guard so he can get majority toughness 7-9 with iron arm. IA, endurance, and dome make him insanely hard to kill even with focused firepower.

I must admit I do like the idea of Deepstriking a Swarmlord deathstar unit. And that looks like a really awesome list just for this perpose rpricew

I have only played one 6th ed match to be honest though so I'm not up to date with all the rules. I just wanted to confirm with you guys, can we take 3 HQ units now in a 2000 point game? So we can take the SL + Prime and the Flyrant for DS support.

Also, I have heard now that we must have at least half the units on the table at the beginning of the match. One question I have, which is a pretty silly one so excuse me in advance. But do Ymgarls starting a match dormant in a terrain piece at the beginning of the game count as part of the units off the table or on? The reason I ask is because if they count as being in reserve in the beginning, that list wont be able to outflank a Tervigon will it?

Yeah that list has 10 units which do not "have" to stay in reserves.

Swarmlord, Tyrant guard, Prime, 2x Tervigons, 2x Termagant squads, 2x Ymgarl Stealers and the Flyrant.
The DoM and Fex have to start in reserve because of the Spores.

This means you can have 5 units in reserve.
Both Ymgarl stealer broods, a Tervigon plus up to 2 more units can be placed into reserve.

I use that combo quite a lot. There are just a few notes on how it works:

1) Gate does not give the brood the Deepstrike ability. He has to start on the table or he can go into reserves as normal and walk on. When you use the power you can move up to 24" and are treated as deepstriking. It is better that way as he will be able to assault turn 2.

2) When deepstriking and you mishap you can NOT lose the psyker, you lose a member of the unit. It stings when you lose a TG to a mishap, but one would have probably been shot off walking across the board. It sucks doubly when you lose a Prime attached to the star. Keep in mind if later in the game and you have a lictor on the board that you can use him to not scatter.

3) Gate on Swarmlord rocks very hard. Doubly if you have FNP or TK Dome on the unit. I have gotten him into CC on turn 2 every game I have gotten Gate. If you don't have an invul or FNP then be smart and NOT put them in the center of your opponents army though.

4) Take some backup with you. I run a deathstar with a Prime with BS/LS and 2 TG with Lash. Also make sure that the main elements of your army can get to you by turn 3 at the latest.

Hmmm so gate near a lictor and you don't need to roll the scatter dice, so no chance for loosing a model....
I wonder if you would still need to roll to see if the warp claims them? But that is only fluffwise, no scatter means no roll right?

It says "if, when you scatter", so to me that says you wouldn't bother rolling. After all if you rolled a hit, the double wouldn't matter either.

I've used gate on Swarmy and on DoM. It's great for repositioning as well as getting out of tarpits. Also just to extend the threat radius.

I may have to try this. I've tried using Swarmy a couple of times and like how powerful he is when you get him in combat, but moving him there is just so slow. My preference has been for Flyrants lately, but I may have to try both now since that is a big potential movement, and could get him where I need him a lot faster.

How do you gate on DoM? I thought it was only used on the HQ that has it, and is part of the unit. Are you using PoM or TP to join with the DoM to do this?
