Are tervigons always a neccesity?

I use Tervigons a lot, but did go through a bit of a period in 5th Ed when I wanted not to use them. And I got by OK. I used a Tyranid Warrior brood for backfield synapse, and they did OK.

However, in the end the Tervigon is still better than them at that role. It's tough, durable, can create lots of scoring units, create some good counter-attacking units, and can buff lots of units. Not a bad unit.

Necessary, no? You can get a successful list without one. But with the new rules in 6th Ed making them better, they're a very good unit, and strengthen a list a lot.

I would not think of turning down the best troops choice in Tyranid Codex at the moment. 3 psychic powers CC's , TS , AG's is how I roll.

I have never thought of them as necessary. I do see them a easily our best troops choice now that genestealers are no longer as frightening as they were, but just trade the points spent on a tervigon for lots of termagants and you have a viable list.

I do feel my list is better for including tervigons rather than lots of gants for many reasons, but I do think I could still win without them.

I haven't used them for a fair while and I do fine. I have always had Tyrants for support and now Broodlords add some support powers too.

Without a Terv though, you are looking at the more offensive, fragile lists though.

Either mycetic spore spam, or Broodlord spam. Either way your troops are generally vulnerable to small arms fire so you need to have something big in their face soaking it up, such as Flyrants/Swarmlord/Trygons.

This wouldn't be such a conundrum if Cruddace had just properly fixed Warriors, and given them T5 or immunity to ID. As it stands, the Tervigon is the only Troops choice that is legitimately durable in the face of a nasty enemy list. If you try to go Warrior heavy battlecannons or other ordnance will ruin your day pretty quickly. The little guys all have their place, but they can't withstand a dedicated firestorm, and can't go to ground very often. Genestealers were fine in 5th, a legit glass cannon, but with the nerf to outflanking they're too vulnerable now.

Ur right, stealers used to be my favorite troops choice in 5th, no longer. give me tervigons and gaunts any day of the week now. with AG and toxin sacs on the Tervigon, gaunts are horrendous now, wat only last sat a brood of gaunts took on (and killed I might add) a C'Tan Shard, thanks purely to the nearby Tervigon, i ended up tabled in the end (mind shakcle scarabs cursed things) but that was funny,
so getting back on point in my view they certainly are a necessity if only for the spawning ability (free troops chioces Yes Please) , and thanks to smash now they can be S10, and are chacters now)

Speaking of the value of extra Troops units, I think another, slightly less obvious benefit to Tervigons is that they might ease some of the pain from the screwjob we seem set to receive from the "1999+1" paradigm that is developing in the tourney scene (under which other armies can happily take allied armies with 8 troops selections, but we're stuck at 6 because the tournament hivemind is too scared to do 2000 point games the way the rulebook says they should be done)
