Large outflanking broods of Warriors?

Hey all,

the following unit is very expensive but the 6th Edition should make her viable as an outflanking unit:

• S5 harms Rhinos and Chimeras reliably
  
• Against ID Weapons it can count as having 8 wounds, not bad I would say
  
• A troop choice is always good in mission objective based scenarios
  
• It can not be destroyed by only one enemy unit (like devilgaunts)
  
• Warriors need to be used because they are cool!
  
• The game is not about S8+ spam

Sounds pretty cool, in my 2k list im doing something similar although the unit is smaller and ive avoided getting as much expensive wargear in the hope it doesnt become a complete points sink. However i am pretty sure it will work well putting a Prime in the unit is also nice of course.

I like it! Consider adding a prime or two, if you want some wound allocation tricks.
A prime can join the Warriors and still be able to use the Outflank rule.

I've used this loadout, although I put in a regenerating Prime and use toxin sacs instead of adrenals (5 wars). I used it to outflank using Hive Commander. One of the attractive things is actually the 4+ save to weather bolter fire and snap shots. Also the ability to actually DO something after outflank (shoot) is wonderful! My warriors came in on turn 2 and murdered a Hydra flak tank by shooting it in the side AV10. They then went on to kill off a guard squad and then another 1/2 of a guard squad. The only problem was that they were slow with somewhat limited range.

I love the unit but it does have some issues. One is that it puts your synapse far away from the rest of the army. Two, it's EXTREMELY expensive and I don't like how it shrinks the rest of my army. Third is it is slow, and has no move through cover. Four is it's krak missile bait, although you may be able to lead with the Prime and take a hit or two.

Still it works well for me. I think that now more than ever armor 4+ is king, which is why I have switched to Ymgarl stealers; it's just so much more durable in a cover save 5+, overwatch world.

Are you sure? I was sure it was not possible.

I've bewn thinking of outflanking 5+1 prime as a shooty unit as well. They may be krak sponges but the prime helps there and by the time they come, so would my Mawloc/Fexen/devgaunts/etc. Good target saturation and getting them into some cover would be a tough nut to crack.

I would think a Prime would be mandatory in such a unit, as BS3 will really drag down the effectiveness.

Also the Barbed Strangler just doesn't seen worth its points, given that Deathspitters are assault weapons and you'll be in close range I would recommend Rending Claws.

Would definitely need to see the rest of your list tho to make judgement.

Good point that I hadn't thought of before, but on the upside a BS could pin a unit that is close allowing you to dakka away more if you wish.

EDIT, A COOL SCENARIO:
Warriors outflank and take two HPs from a Rhino. Then the spore takes the last one. The devilgaunts deal with the passengers.

Yes, not about S8+ spam, but I do think we'll be seeing a bit more of that, in particular, demolisher cannons and various other high strength blast weapons (S10, not 8).

Issue is that although tyranids are a contender, the bigger threat with the rules changes is units like paladins and ork nobz, which are no longer able to lose their FNP except to ID weapons. It is much more practical in this edition to field such a S10 blast template, especially if it is AP2 as this edition grants additional effect on the vehicle damage table.

Ordnance weapons, in general, saw a major boost as the new rules don't prevent them from firing their other weapons in the same turn.

For my SM, looking at a thunderfire, whirlwind, and a vindicator for my heavy slots. This isn't because of tyranid threats, but because this edition favors blast weapons (except against flyers...).

I've been using a 5man warrior unit with deathspitters and a barbed starngler for a long time (since halfway 5th). And the unit almost never fails me. But I don't face more than 4 - 5 missiles aimed at me, normally. Our group doesn't like spam.

This unit is very good. And as long as you have a couple of MCs on the table, those missiles ain't flying to the warriors.

I say try it out. I would love to know what a BIG unit can do.

I too have been using warriors in a smaller size (5) but prefer the venom cannon over barbed strangler. It just allows me an extra weapon to shoot at vehicles on the way in, as the deathspitters normally are not in range turn 1.
Also S6 blast is good against DE and other T3 models to ignore FnP and instant death.

Outflanking such a large unit will draw attention, but most likely also make people think twice about going close to edges, with that amount of firepower walking on, it may cause the similar fear as genestealers use to!
