Coming back to 40k...confused and scared..

Hi all!

Been away for a good year or so due to health and other stuff. I'm thinking of getting back into 40k (pretty much just the Rippers, gonna sell off the rest, taking up too much room). I've heard that there's a new edition out already.

I haven't had a chance to read it yet. Anyone know if the Ripper Horde will still be a viable (well, as viable as it used to be) list at all?

Ummm, that's all i got. I don't think using only rippers will allow you to have much a chance anymore. You could aim for secondary victory points (kill their hq, get in their deployment zone, get first blood) but its all for not if you can't kill their scoring units (objectives are 3 victory points now and everything is victory points) because you can't contest their objectives anymore. Not with swarms.

Well that sucks! What am I going to do with my 100 bases of Rippers now? They're the only 'nids I have aside from the Parasite and about 20 rippergaunts (modded hormies to look like big rippers).

I guess I'll really have to take a good read through the book. No more fearless wounds is awesome, they couldn't hold in 5th, but could still contest (any model could contest), now they can't even do that?

Well, there goes a year or two of scrounging everywhere for enough rippers and learning how to play the list to minimize it's flaws..

Won't work anymore in that format -- 5 out of 6 missions are Objective-based, and Rippers cannot score. You could, however, do a combination of Tervigon x 2 for HQ + Tervigon + 10 Termagants for 2 Troops, spawn more Troops as needed, and use 4 x 10 Rippers and Skyslashers, or somesuch.

Tjey can't score, but can they still contest?

Even in 5th they couldn't score. I used them to contest and draw games. I was hoping that the tactic would still be viable.

The list has never had any scoring potential. It was all about area/objective denial and contesting.

It's the alternate style of play. Going for the draw from the beginning of the game lets me pass up obvious avenues of advance to try and lock up my opponent. Also the odd list factor throwing them for their normal play style.

What no one else has mentioned is that they die when they fail Synapse, as soon as you fail your IB check, you lose wounds equal to the number you failed by

Well, I've played the list through 4th and 5th, tweaking it as needed. I've never really found myself losing too many from the Mindless rule. The range from the Parasite is massive and i'm more than willing to sacrifice units to tarpit things. It's rare for units to be out of range of the Parasite and not be in combat.

I'll start painting it up again when I get back into it. I haven't gotten anything done on them in ages (only ever got the one squad done).

I do believe swarms have lost stealth in addition to being unable to contest objectives. Looks like you're screwed.

Well Damm it! there goes years of amassing Rippers...I'm not even sure if it'd be worth it to unload them on people.

I guess my dream of a true End Stage force of Rippers devouring the world, lead by The Parasite and a Malanthrope with a full set of Hive Guard protecting the towers and a random fex's to crush any little bit of resistance is gone for good.

It sucks, you can pretty much run any stage of invasion except for the End Stage...that's always been my favorite.

The fluff for the list:

Sliver fleet Disorder

Disorder is the remains of a splinter fleet that had almost finished consuming a world when it was hit with an Exterminatus. As noted on the world of Tethris and Araidne V, some things can survive by burrowing, namely Carnifex's, due to their massive resilience, and Rippers, due to their sheer number, some survive.

Disorder is a shattered bearly coherant mass of flesh, directed, not necessarily controlled, by the new found leader the Parasite and the sole surviving Malanthrope. The swarms of massively enhanced Rippers, both crawling and winged horde forward unloading torrents of fire as a new threat rears its head. A new form of Ripper, larger and far more potent in combat, this new threat seems to be this fleet's version of the Hormagaunt.

The few remaining Carnifexes have begun to shrug off the massive injuries suffered in the bobmardment and have begun rampaging the desolate world, slamming into the combats they encounter, having evolved to survive the harsh conditions that exist in a post exterminatus world, their reinforced carapaces aid their survival as they belch bioplasma at thier foes while their scything talons rip apart the enemy.

How about sticking 2 or 3 of the horms on a biger base and count them as ravenrors. (big rippers kinda)

Throw in a pair of trygons/mawlocs (huge rippers kinda)

take some zoans or vthropes (specialised rippers)

up to 2 more malanthropes

and play for the wipe out!

I thought about getting a bunch of hive guard and some fex's to crush the opponent with. If I could afford that many Malanthropes I'd be a very happy man.
