wounds overflow in challanges update

Phil Kelly did a Q and A with the new rulebook FAQ at gamesday. Wounds do not overflow from challanges or count towards combat res.

FAQ will be out in a few more weeks according to him. Looks like my source was right. Trying to find out what else was asked in the Q and A.

That blows. Tprime, Tyrant w/guard and Tervigons are gonna eat it hard once pinata characters built as cheap as possible become the norm.

I think that Tyrant Guards should be able to accept challenges on behalf of the Tyrant. That makes perfect sense to me, to allow the Tyrant the ability to either be shielded from the Character, or the Squad attacking depending on which would be the most beneficial.

Well I am more confused as to why changes amongst Tyranids are even made. It doesn't make sense. they describe it as insulting them and calling them out into a 1v1. How or why would Tyranids accept that?

That said, I disagree. Tyrand guard have teir entire fluff dedicated to "I jump in front of they tyrant". In the case of a challenge, I don't understand why the tyrant would have the guard not accompany him (see above) but ruleswise it's better.

I have found that it has worked so far for me. Kill the important character and then next round destroy the unit. he only army I see this being an issue with is IG, but if they want an entire squad tied up by my Flyrant instead of shooting, good luck to them.

We can actually use this to our advantage. Issue a challenge when you charge any unit with a character, if they decline their character doesn't get to attack, good for you, if they accept you obliterate their puny character and then your Hive Tyrant or other big scary character waits until their assault phase and wipes the rest of the squad, avoiding the enemy's shooting phase as it's locked in combat.

Yeah, what PrinceRaven said. Additionally, it's worth not getting beat on by squads of Grey Knights if you can just smush the Justicar and get on with it.

Besides, a multi-charge by a big monster and little gribblies, in that order, means that the big monster should soak the Overwatch and the Character, while the little'uns go after the rank and file.

Yeah, Tyrants and broodlords are great at this - since they normally go first.

Even swarmy excels here since he usually goes first and with warp speed, it's even better.

The problem here is that without the wound overflow, you can end up with your guy tied up in CC alot longer than necessary.

Funny that our fluff specifically describes the Swarmlord ignoring a challenge and sending in Carnifexes to take a challenger.

Use your imagination. Just because the book states something like that, it is not how it plays out. Maybe the "hero" dives in front of the Tyrant or the Tyrant notices the Sergeant crush a few of the gribbles and strides forward, carving a path to him.

You do not have to imagine things like the book is written.

Also, it really does not matter if I am tied in combat for an extra round. That actually works out well as I am normally the one assaulting. Means combat ends on his turn instead of me wiping the squad and being shot at, freeing me up to assault again on my turn.

It's fluff murder for me. If some puny t3 "hero" dives in front of my Hive Tyrant who rolls 4 murderous blows that turn t3 humies into a spam smear, why is he forced to use all of his attacks on the moron? To smear the smear, then smear it again, then stomp on it? Why would a Hive Tyrant give a (please do not swear) about this "hero"? He wouldn't. It's gonna end up being a tarpit, I don't put big points into murderous CC monsters so they can get butthurt that some sarge flipped him off and waste his killing potential.

Excellent point! If my Tyrant charges a 5man combat squad, I can Challenge the Sergeant, kill it, and be safe during my opponent's shooting phase. Quite useful, actually.

Well, being able to be safe during opponent shooting is a bonus. However, I can think of a few ways using glorious intervention with 2+ Characters in a squad to tie up a HT for several rounds. Not to mention, I did not see anything about LO'S being disallowed ( I didnt look to hard yet) but if LO'S is allowed it will make things even worse.

Well that 5 man combat squad will probably tie up your HT for 2 turns unless you throw something else at it. If you eat the Sarge the first turn, odds are you will not kill all 4 remaining members in the second round. Overall, the HT is too important to be tied up for 2+ turns munching on a piddly combat squad.
