Tyranid 6th edition codex, what can we expect?

No rumours here, just want to see what people think, or would like to see in the Tyranid 6th edition codex. Yes I am bored and was thinking it could be fast approaching depending on how much money GW wants from us.

Well it's been over 2 years now since we got our 5th edition codex. Since we can expect a new one in 2 to 3 years, I am leaning on 2 years since GW want more money from us Nid players. Since it takes about 18-24 months to make a codex from begining to launch, I believe we can say GW is in the begining of the stages of making Tyranid 6th edition codex. So why not let us discuss this in a polite manner, and maybe, just maybe since this would be the begining stages of the codex developement, things could change for the better this time. I think alot of us, didn't spend as much money on Tyranids because of the lack luster codex/5th edition rules we got to play with, so maybe we can show GW what would make us spend our hard earned money on Nids this time.

I believe it would be safe to say that Robin Cruddence will not be writing our codex. Something I saw Phil Kelly say (or should say someone on the internent quote him) something about writers not doing back to back codices so we will get a new writer. Maybe Phil Kelly will do 6th, or Mattew Ward or someone entirely new?

I am not sure what I want. I guess it will depend on how 6th edition works, but I would like to have more customizing like we had in 4th, if not more. I think most of us want that.

I believe the Trygon/Mawloc will have a price increase and Carnifex will be cheaper, if not be made "must have" units to sell more Carnifex models.

Not sure if we will get a New unit or another IA creature tonned down. Since we got a few new minis, GW would want them to sell more so maybe the new minis we got would still be great minis to use.

I think Spinegaunts mighyt be made more powerfull since it seems everyone got rid of them in 5th edition so it would be another model sale.

Depending on how 6th edition plays, I want grenades of some type and more attacks for our Nids. Yes I know I suck playing 40K but I am surprised on how SM and other units can have the same or more attacks than Nids, even when I am the one doing the assualt and get the extra bonus Attack.

Space marines and others have extra Attacks because of Pistol or CC weapon that gives them extra A.

I wonder if the Lictor would actually be used for once. I guess the same for the Pyrovore. I don't think many of those minis have been sold so maybe, finally 6th edition will give us a reason to by them. Either in rules or the new codex will make them viable.

I think Carnifex will still have broods and will be able to kit them out differently. The only reason we have that rule is because of Ork wound allocation shennanigans etc, so since I think 6th edition will get rid of this, there would be no reason why Carnifex brood can't have this.

So for me, to spend more money on Tyranids and from a GW store or FLGS and not Ebay, I would need great fun rules for 6th editon. (that can't change since it's already done, and printed if rumours are true). So I want good fun rules in the 6th edition codex then. I want CLEAR, CONSISE rules that I don't need a FAQ to tell me how they should work properly. (also don't want a FAQ nerf LOL )

I haven't bought the Pyrovore or Raveners or Lictors since I don't think the rules are much good to be paying over $50 Canadian on units. I don't think the Ravener rules are all that great and at $50+ a pop for 3, that would be like $150 for 9 of them. Give me a good reason to be paying $150 to use 9 Raveners (just looking cool doesn't cut it. That is what EBAy if for if I just want to look cool.) (will see if they become faster with 6th BRB rules, but not becoming cheaper when in plastic is a real turn off for me. They must be made awsome for me to want and spend money on something that was promised to be cheaper when in plastic)

Carnifex are ok, but for the point cost, (and $$$ cost) it's cheaper to use other units. Don't just nerf the Trygon/Mawloc just so carnifex are a more viable choice, give me a reason to WANT to use the Carnifex and buy another 4 or so.

So boys and girls, what do you think and hope Codex Tyranids 6th edition will have. It's only 2 years away, maybe less.

Personally, i want to see what happens with the eldar codex before making any judgements about what new codexes will look like. Why eldar? Eldar are the oldest "full" codex. By that i mean that every slot has 4+ choices and there is little room to be adding more units in. With an incoming update of the eldar codex, it will be interesting to see what happens. There are two ways this can go.

1: models are retired to make way for new ones. This encourages sales of new models while at the same time allows them to get rid of some of the old casts that would need updated anyways.
2: models are kept, but weaker ones are buffed to top quality status. this means that all the old models that never really sold well would become a desired commodity with many in each list.

The nid codex is pretty full. It has some room to move units between slots and condense units into their base form (genestealers take ymargl as an upgrade that changes slot rather than be a separate unit, warriors take wings, cfex take wings, ect), however, there is a lot of room for either of the other scenarios to happen. Personally i think nid codex needs a entire overhaul of many of the units added in the 5th codex. Tfex, Tervigon, and Hive guard need to have their rules entirely rewritten to make them more in line with both the tyranid fluff and their own fluff-rules transition (tervigons should be buffing units at range, not in proximity to limit the exposure of your spawning unit to enemy fire, hive guard are back line defense and should mid range shooting, Tfex have a ability to draw nid creatures if they are threatened and are supposed to be artillery platforms). Then pretty much all the named units need to be taken out and replaced by new ones (represents nids not staying the same). Hopefully kelly does the eldar codex, the BT codex, and the nid codex (he likes his xenos, so possibly). Hes pretty much the only one who understands 40k enough to write a fluffy, solid codex.

Until we actually see 6th Ed, and see what "native" 6th Ed Dexes look like, I don't think we can expect much about the next Nid Dex except for a 4-5 year wait

a lot of really simple changes would make our dex a lot more usable. having any unit with move through cover or fleet ignore initiative penalties for assaulting after making a difficult terrain test solves the grenades problem. moving units around in FOC would solve the clogged elites problem. make warriors and ravenors T5 2W instead of T4 3W. adjust some points costs.

what can we actually expect? who knows! i read on BoLS earlier that one of the latest rumors was that template weapons fired into terrain would actually set it on fire. be hilarious for nids if that happened, and by hilarious i mean rage inducing.

We don't need New models (apart from maybe a harpy and a drop spore) but some New rules would be good. Maybe some changes which make the tfex acid spray and fleshborer hive viable options. Maybe the tervigon could spawn a set number of gaunts per turn and not run out on the role of a double. Maybe mc's points cost could be lowered and maybe the tyrant could become a combat powerhouse.

It'll be late in 6th (4 years from now) before we have a chance for a new Codex. Chaos, Dark Angels, Eldar, Tau, Space Marines will all get new ones before us. At the current rate of 1 (maybe 2) per year, just those alone will be 3-4 years. Not including another 3+ codex (Black Templars likely) to intersperce between the Xenos, and even probably Imperial Guard and Orks again before Tyranids. Personally, I wouldn't be surprised not to see another Tyranid Codex until 7th Edition.

And what will happen? Hive Guard will go up to 100 points a piece, Zoeys will decrease in points, Carnifexes will become un-nerfed (somewhat) while Trygons get worse. Tervigons will likely become slightly worse while Tyrants slightly better. There will be a few new somethings - depending strongly on what kind of game they're pushing at the time - maybe the Dactalyis or something like that.

Whatever they can do to cause people to buy the new models rather than just keep playing with the old ones.

TBH, the only thing I'd like to see in a future codex is less obvious choices. Or you could say make every unit viable. I'd like to be able to make a list without hive guards or zoanthropes and not feel like i'm most likely passing on some obvious stuff. Or to be able to have a few pyrovores in my list and not getting plowed.

Agreed. More customization would be nice too, but then you're quickly looking at an "optimal build" rather than a true DIY-multirole 'nid unit. I guess I'm saying that I want more exclusive choices, not a ton of "must-have upgrades" you'd never leave home without.

I'm completely uninterested in a new Tyranid codex at this point - the last weeks before 6th ed drops and resets the game. Let us play in the new environment a while before dreaming of changes.

- t5 w2 warriors and ravenors
- carnifexen with fleet and point reduction
- make the harpy, pyrovore and mawloc more viable
- perhaps rippers can finally become the top swarm, maybe give them a rule that allows them to sabotage vehicles
- bring back the red terror
its all the basic wish listing that we all want. i would like Kelly to do our next dex and bring back the customization that we once had, but it would be limited as we have so many more units perhaps this could be fixed like so:
- termies, warriors, tyrant, rippers and prime could be given wings as an upgrade.
- allow warriors to upgrade to hive guard & prime, stealers to yealers. perhaps units could upgrade to their characters like zoans to DoM and fex to OOE.

i would also like the new dex to enable us to have themed armies for example:
swarm - would give us loads more troop slots, but less heavy/elite.
winged - more fast attack, less elite/heavy
nidzillla - more heavy, less elite/fast
vanguard - cheaper fexen, stealers, hormies and winged bugs. the rest are more expensive
assault focused - cheaper melee only units, tervigon spawns hormies. ranged is pricey
ranged focused - cheaper gun beasts like biovoires and dakka fexen, tervigons spawn spine gaunts or just termies. assault bugs are more pricey

well that's kinda assuming there is still a limit to each unit type.

Unfortunately, like many people in this thread, I foresee a balancing of codex power away from the current desired units towards the ones that we don' t typically use. Things like Spinegants becoming better than Termagants might be frustrating, but with a little work you can fix up your Gants for free (if you're stupid like myself and use plastic glue on 20mm models).

I can see the Pyrovore suddenly becoming a must-have unit.

If the 6th ed leak is any sort of indicator, I think we can expect some sort of change to how our biomorphs and weapons work in close combat. I also suspect there will be a change to how we go about our shooting, similar to how the Venom Cannon has changed over the editions.

Vague impressions, I know, but based on how Nids have changed since 3rd, I suspect the changes to reach pretty deep into the Nid game-style without stopping us from feeling like the locusts of the universe.

i would far rather that the codex be based upon a hive tyrant (upgradeable to swarmlord, since they now have the kit).
All current FA and Troops except gaunts and rippers are elites or FA. HG move to HS and harpies stay in FA, lictors move to FA. Then have the Hive Tyrant change slots of units based on his upgrades. Wings? rippers w wings, warriors w wings, and gaunts with wings (get rid of gargs, just make them an upgrade to gaunts) are all troops. Bounding upgrade gives genestealers(inc ymargls) and gaunts with bounding as troops. Something like this which encourages you to actually take tyrants and makes them seem like they are leading something rather than walking around as a fire magnet.

A tervigon that spawns horms instead of terms would be just damn scary assuming all the other rules worked the same way.

2. Better cover art.

3. New units.

4. New models to accompany new units.

5. Models for units we STILL don't have.

6. Updated older models. I.E: Biovore, Broodlord etc.
