End Result - I finished 3/0/0 with two tablings and a decisive win - there were more players then this, but I took a shot of the final ten for memory:
1st Orks: 85 points
2nd Tyranids: 83 points
3rd Grey Knights: 82 points
4th Dark Eldar: 74 points
5th Grey Knights: 70 points
6th Imperial Guard: 68 points
7th Space Marines: 67 points
8th Dark Angels: 64 points
9th Orks: 63 points
10th Imperial Guard: 62 points
Ok, well I bit the bullet and took List One. For those who do not wish to read the entire write up, I came 2nd in the event and walked away with two box sets (A box of Gargoyles and a box of DE Scourges which I can swap at my local GW - the gargoyles I am keeping). I lost two points to a Dark Angel player using Belial who believed I did not have a fair and balanced list, even though I had given him full points....
My list was as follows for those who did not see it, but I was fairly chuffed beating a guy who represents the SA Masters at the Australian Nationals and tabling Grey Knights:
== HQ ==
Hive Tyrant (1) - Scything Talons, Lash Whip And Bonesword, Wings, Paroxysm, Leech Essence, Old Adversary
== Elites ==
Hive Guard Brood (2) = 100 pts.
Hive Guard Brood (2) = 100 pts.
The Doom Of Malan'tai Brood (130 pts.)
The Doom Of Malan'tai (1) = 90 pts.
Mycetic Spore (1) = 40 pts.
== Troops ==
Genestealer (11) - Toxin Sacs
Genestealer Brood (10) - Toxin Sacs
Hormagaunt Brood (20) - AG
== Fast Attack ==
Gargoyle Brood (20) - AG
Ravener Brood (4) - Rending Claws
Tyranid Shrike Brood (3) - Rending Claws, Scything Talons
== Heavy Support ==
Trygon Prime (1) - Containment Spines, AG, Synapse Creature, Shadow In The Warp
Trygon (1) - AG, Instinctive Behaviour - Feed
== Total ==
1999 pts.
Game One - Dawn of War / Seize Ground
The Dark Angels had Belial and Terminators as troop choices. He also had a Landraider, some Land Speeders (one with AV14), a large Bike squad and a few other things I can not recall.
Not alot happened first turn, besides me dodging around terrain, keeping out of LOS, I lost 5 Stealers from one squad on my rights flank.
He basically went for all my troops after this, trying to eliminate them from holding objectives. He killed 6 Stealers from one squad, about 7 Hormagaunts and some Gargoyles. I got the assault on some Terminators, killing 5 out of 6, and seeing him locked in combat (thankyou +2 terminator save).
He got nervous as I had swept behing him with both units of Stealers and had the rest advancing up the guts, so he pushed forward and attempted to wipe out my numbers. He killed all but 4 Hormagaunts and hurt the Gargoyles, but failed to draw line of site to my Genestealers.
My force drove forward and I hit his Bikers with a Trygon Prime and all my Raveners. Needless to say, the Bikers didn't last long.
As the game continued, the Hive Guard managed to destroy two weapons on the Landraider in their shooting, but the two Trygons ended up popping it.
The Tyrant did well, causing havoc, but dying in the end to Belial. My Genestealers had the last laugh though, wiping out the Hq Squad to a man.
The rest is a blur, but I won holding two objectives to none. One objective was held by 4 Hormagaunts that were babysat by the Trygon Prime after it popped the last units on his left flank and my 11 man stealers (which were down to 9 after sweeping two squads) held another on his right flank.
Conclusion
My Genestealers were the real winners in this game, the just got the jump on his terminators, killed enough and got locked in combat. They would then destroy the unit in his assault round and then sweep into something else in my following turn.
I feel deployment really won it for my. The DoM did very little, but it was enough to cluster him in the centre, especially since I had infiltrated two stealer units on each flank out of LOS.
Game Two - Spearhead / Annihilation
This game was against the player who was selected for the SA Masters at the Australian Nationals. When some people passed and asked the result, there were some eyebrows raised at the result, especially since I tabled him by Turn 5.
He had 3x Deffrolla's, a truck, Lootas, massive blobs of Boyz, a massive squad of Nobz with something that granted them FNP, 4x Deffcopters and a few other things - was surprised he had no dreds.
He got first turn (my second time rolling a one on deployment - but I didnt mind).
He opened up with massive shooting, but I was smart and kept everything in cover and passed many +4 saves. We played cat and mouse for about a turn, till I bit the bullet and pushed forward with my hormagaunts and hit a 20man squad of boyz in cover with my stealers - surprisingly taking out the majority of squad and only losing 5 in the process due to some terrible rolling and some great armour saves!!!
He Waaaghed! his Nobz into my Hormagaunts after I had shaken his Deffrolla and cut them all down, but I took two with me, even with FNP saves. He also shoot down the last of one of my stealer squads, but in his assault, I finished off the other Boy squad my stealers had assaulted in my turn.
My next turn saw the Stealers that had rolled through the twenty man squad assault a Deffrolla and wreck it (love opened top vehicles!).
The DoM came down infront of both squads of Lootas and decimated them both! I then fired a blast into another 20man squad that had disembarked from another Rolla and killed 14 as they were clumped up nicely.
From here, my Tyrant Paroxysmed his HQ and the Nobz, twin assaulted them with 3x Shrikes, 5x Raveners and a Trygon Prime - the combat lasted two turns, but was over once my Tyrant wandered in and cut down his HQ and the guy granting FNP.
The game went downhill from there for him, seeing his luck degenerate into a few double 1's on the dice, but it was already over by this stage.
Conclusion
The Raveners were beasts in this game, seeing 25 attacks on a assault come in handy - they worked great in the previous game also, but I saw them shine as I lost a unit of Stealers early.
The MVP was the DoM and my Tyrant. The DoM destroyed a ridiculous amount of models while the Flyrant with Paroxysm stole the show in multi-assaults and as a support unit, seeing a lot of rerolls with Old Adversary win CC decisively.
Game 3 - Pitched Battle / Capture and Control
Grey Knights, my bane... I was grinding my teeth walking to this table, especially as he had won his last two games convincingly.
He had 2x Psydreds (or whatever those MC's are called), Purifiers as Troops, terminators, a Storm raven and a whole bunch of shooting with Psycannons etc.
I again went second and the mind games began as he got nervous seeing 85 odd models lined up on the other side of the board. The DoM also worried him and he admitted he was afraid of it.
This game was a bit of a blur, he went for my troops and wiped out many of them... I had some bad luck when I was about to assault his Assault Grey Knight (they had jetpacks - not sure what they were - they all look the same...) and they fell back after losing two wounds to Hive Guard Fire, leaving my Stealers in No Mans Land.
My Hive Guard blew up his vehicles fast with some great shooting... bt his hammered my Hormagaunts and Genestealers from the word go, hoping to eliminate my chances of holding objective. In the end, I was left with 1 Hormagaunt that held my base (which I placed near the centre of the board).
The MVP's were the MC's and gargoyles. The trygons I ran them together and assaulted them together - they ate through his terminators, Purifiers, two Psydreds plus his HQ - he tried on many occasions to force weapon them, but failed numerous times.
The gargoyles locked up a Psydread for 3 assault turns, leaving it on one wound which the Tyrant waltz'd in and finished.
I tabled him in Turn 5 (I had to as he killed every troop on the board by then).
Conclusion for the Day
The Raveners were amazing, with a 4+ cover save behind the Hormagaunts and stealers on flanks, they just went unnoticed. They hammered the Dark Angels, went ok vs the Orks, seeing one live and basically killed a Psydred and locked it up for ages.
I played my Flyrant much better, taking cover saves and not being over-eager with him. The Shrikes again were a little frustrating, but I needed their Synapse and Shadows in both Marine games.
The DoM didn't do much in both Marine games, but the psychological effect he had was awesome and against the Grey Knights he ate 3 full squads of firing before going down and in retrospect, gave me time to cross the board.
Hope you had a great read, Illithid
