I'd say a noob is anyone who plays the game in a way that show they don't understand the game, including:
Driving the wrong way in a vehicle
Rushing to get the best weapons
Not knowing how to use those weapons
Not working together
Teamkilling, burst fire

I disagree with people saying camping is wrong. All it's doing is using a tactic the player thinks best. When I find campers, I find it fun to work out how to kill them. Grenade spamming, however, is just nooby.

I consider a noob to be someone that should know how to play reasonably well because they have been playing long enough... but just can't.
They also have a tendency to be annoying when things haven't gone their way.

I don't include casual players, people who only have time to play for maybe a few hours every other weekend or true newbies to the games in the category of Noob.
I also usually won't count someone who is generally not good at games regardless of how long they play them... as long as they don't get whiney when things don't go their way. For example, I simply suck at strategy games like Red Alert... but at least I don't whinge hard when I inevitably lose.

So...
Noobs are people who should be able to play but whinge when they (constantly) lose.

I also relate these things in real life.
We have several noob doctors that will request every examination under the sun despite already having a diagnosis or having a series of set protocols that they should follow for making a diagnosis.
Also doctors that request things as Urgent when it clearly is not.

But there are a lot of ways to be a noob, not just in Shooters. The first thing that comes on my mind are RPG games. I'd consider you an RPG noob if you dodn't respect the old classics, and for being a smartass and talking things about RPGs that you don't know about.

For instance, we had a case couple of weeks ago in some other forum about a guy who called Mass Effect 2 one of the greatest RPGs ever and praising it for being the first RPG which has a totally non linear story... The ammount of ignorance in his post was amazing. Luckily, some old RPG veterans quickly came and basicly told him "Son, have you ever heard of Baldur's Gate, Deus Ex...?"

Wow, that's quite scary. Mass Effect 2 is great, don't get me wrong here, but the past... The past is what makes the present possible. I ended up in a low of fights when Fallout 3 was announced (as in, not Van Buren) and people were like "Oh my god, this looks like so much fun!"

I desperately tried to make them understand how important Fallout 1 & 2 was, how great games they were and what kind of thrilling storyline they introduced. As a result people started blaming them "For not being shooters, thus boring!"

Needless, to say, I burned them all alive. Heretics.

I concur with Hyper Kinetic: A noob is someone who is just plan annoying. Why you consider them annoying (they use tactics that you can't beat/ they lose and whine about it/ they try to get you into the back of their van, ext) varies by person. But ultimately, a noob is an annoying person.

I hate when they either A) Get lost and then it never respawns because they are still in it. or B) Drive to stupid points/areas rather than using the vehicle how it supposed to be used..

Same with games with like.. big guns or mech suits and stuff, When some idiot grabs it and just doesn't do it right. I rage so hard man..

Define "just doesn't do it right".

That could also be a newbie.

For example, the first time I picked up DOTA was with a friend who was a veteran.
He put me in a game with a few of his clan members, saying that I was a newbie, and we played against another group in a friendly...
And I was called a Noob incessantly for the entire time because I wasn't using X build for my character, for not looking at the map at all times for alerts and pushes and rushes (terms I was completely unfamiliar with at the time), for doing things completely incorrectly... and so on.
One or two of them even rage-quit on us.
After the game, my friend said that, yeah, I played (please do not swear) but that should be expected of a newbie.. and that none of them had, to his knowledge, ever rage-quit before.

You tell me: Who's the Noob here?
I can tell you that I don't think it was me...
Turned me right off online gaming... if veterans of a respected group will rage-quit when a newbie ruins their game...

This is true Hyper Kinetic, I guess there is a line somewhere. I mean we are all bad when we start.

But I know when I play a game and there is somthing special I will ask people "Whats the good way to use this?" or sit and watch other people so I have a general idea and won't lose the team the game because I "wanted to see what the big gun did"

As for your DotA experaince, DotA players are just like that :/

In games/game modes that I've never played I'll constantly update people on what I'm doing. Not -TOO- often, but just so they have plenty of oppotunity to say "Dude, running up the man cannon in Team Sniper is just dumb."

On strategies, I'll simply just ask if there's anything wrong with what I'm doing and try to make a strategy that works. I'm still bad with all the jargon on all games, I really should learn it on the off chance someone ever speaks on one of them.

That's another thing for the list:
Not using a mic in a strategy
Not using a mic in L4D...
Having a mic in and only use it to swear loudly as you die.

I think one goes from being a 'newb', ie new to the game, to being a 'noob' when he simply decides to give up learning the proper rules, tricks, commands, features, in order to simply whine and take his anger and frustration out on other players. If that doesn't describe it, this surely will:

@hyper: That makes you a Newb, and they evidently aren't much cop at coping with the concept of being nice. Play more, train up, then kill them in a humiliating fashion.

But yeah, basically Noobs are those who aren't new to the game, but generally those who use cheap tactics, are generally offensive, blame everyone and everything but them, and are on the whole the only guy who you discover camping and take the screenshot of before you knife him in the back, and gain satisfaction from doing so.
