Stop moving the unit the moment it contacts the field, resolve casualties, panic test (if applicable) and then continue their movement to the other side or into it, if they don't flee.
You could say that the casualties caused by the mines happen as they ENTER the minefield, therefore the models removed are the ones IN the field, and those falling back are those that have not entered it. Interpret it to cause the casualties as the unit touches the field, and they don't have to run thru the field as they retreat. Why would a unit that moves into a minefield, continue THRU the field before then deciding to run away? Common sense says they would see those ahead of them killed, and flee before entering the field.
And I am with Yori on this, RAW is generaly the way to go, but expecting the rulebooks to cover every possible scenario is unrealistic. Its why most gamers have a brain, and a sense of fairplay. If you have neither of these and can't resolve a situation like this, then go to the dice off.

the 25% marker only matters when you are SHOT at...

example:

10 man marines charge 10 man marines, each side loses 3 marines. According to what you guys are saying, both squads would have to take a morale check. But they don't. Neither lost combat, and their 30% loss was not sustained through enemy SHOOTING.

The mine field, once deployed is just that, a mine field. It says nothing about counting as shooting.

Coredump: this might help. Page 27 Macragge Rulebook under "Morale Checks - Casualties from Enemy Fire" The second paragraph states that morale checks are taken when casualties are sustained "in the Shooting phase" (line 3). The next two lines state that if a unit loses a quarter or more casualties to shooting "during a single Shooting phase" must take a Morale test.

On page 47 of the MRB under "A) Shooting Casualties" the same statements quoted above appear. The other two instances of taking morale tests are found on the next page: losing an assault and tank shock.

Now I must check the SM codex for the Castellian rules when I return home!
