Shrike conversions - warrior plus gargoyle bits

Hi all,

I haven't converted many models yet, so I thought it would be fun to post these shrike conversions and see what you all think. It's my first real serious try to paint as well.

The body is from a warrior. The tail is extended with the end of a gargoyle tail. The two pairs of wings are taken from two gargoyles. Equipped weapons are devourer and rending claws.

The jumping ones got converted legs, wanted one straight and the other needed to be slightly adjusted to look like it contributes to the jumping.

Bases are only painted light grey because I haven't decided yet what my tyranid game board will look like. The contrast it brings is enough for now.

Sorry in advance if some angle(s) feel redundant.

Wow those look well done, though I don't really know why, it is probably the mix of your highlights and that shiny gloss that makes it hard for me to tell whats a highlight and what's just glare kinda funky.

Keep it up whatever you do to get that look.

The second picture of Shrike 1 shows the highlights best I think. They are made of three layers: grey+stone, grey+stone(less grey, more stone), and stone. Then I added 6-7 layers of badab black and finished with the gloss.

As you pointed out, they tend to blend together and that's more or less the point. I tried to make the highlight coloring discrete, to be enhanced with gloss, in order not to take too much focus away from the black theme.

if this is youre firs conversion, i am a believer in beginners luck if nothing else, i love the double wing idea, very original and the subtle leg adjustments make a huge difference. keep up the good work

those are very nice and I like the paint scheme on the wing membranes.

As for the armor plates, I'm still not a believer in a gloss finish.

And yeah, not many seem to use the gloss varnish. I really like it though. The black theme looks a bit boring without it, since I don't want too noticable (painted) highlights. The gloss transforms them quite a bit and contribute with some highlighting of its own. It's sort of hard to tell when I am done and pleased with the models before I add the gloss but when it's been added, it turns out like this and I like it alot. Also, I want these aliens to look wet, as if they just hatched or their drool/spit just can't be kept inside the mouth.

They look very good, I like the double wings aswell. My question though, is are those standard rending claws? They look slightly customized, if not are they just the ones from the genestealer box?
