GW Releases Harpy Model.... Sort Of

I'm gonna take a Lictor model and remove the Scytals and use the wings off of one of the new plastic gargoyles in its place, as a start. Remove the fleshhooks and maybe attach them to the fingers of the rending claws, but that sounds like a pain. The Balrog wing issues saddens me, as they looked like the best pair. Guess I'll have to shell out for Bloodthirster wings since I don't like the dragon ones and my scratch building leaves a lot to be desired. My plans for making a Harpy are simple. Buy a Fex and Trygon model kits. Use the fex body and trygon talons for a tervigon. Use the serpentine trygon body for the harpy. Order bloodthirster wings, order an extra monstrous arms bitz from GW if I can't find spares at my LGS, attach or magnetize wings. Magnetize 2 sets of Barbed Strangler and Venomcannon for it, use some green stuff to add on the Spore Cyst pouch, and for anything else I need covered, and I'm done. Yes, its expensive, but money isn't as much a concern, my total lack of sculpting abilities is. Conversely, if you want a cheaper approach, you could do what I'm doing and buy a McFarlane dragon and a Carnifex kit. Use the upper body of the Fex, and the tail and wings of the dragon. Done. And alot cheaper two, you could make two of them for the price of one with your method, plus the wings will look way better and not alot of modelling is required. Except with my method I get a tervigon, unless I'm missing something. My job prevents me from doing a lot of building myself, anymore, so, are there enough bits for a second torso in the box? Or am I somehow going to use the MacFarlane dragon model for a Tervigon body? Not slamming the idea, just confused.

When I think of a harpy I think of something like this: no way, that would make this a possible tervigon actualy looking at the art it's not too far off. but who gave me that idea.

As far as I understand, a harpy is about trygon sized. The lower T and W comes from it having hollow bones. To me several of the ideas mentioned in this post seems to small.
If I were to make a harpy I would probably use the tail end of a trygon and the front part of a carnifex. (However I probably won't use one as some thing this size will get instant killed right a way as it can never ever hide).

Tenebris is right, minus the "It MUST"
Do remember, tyranids are a species of hyper evolving creatures. They'll develop whatever they require to survive. I can think of at least one creature (catachan devil) that doesn't satisfy those qualifications remotely.
The "rules of tyranid commonality" are really just more common noticed trends which GW has built the NEWER model range around.
Also GW doesn't discourage conversions. Ex. I have what used to be an elite fex. 4 scything talon legs. 2 sets of twin linked devourers. 8 limbs. GW wouldn't give me the boot for that, esp it being all GW parts of course.

Last I read you could use Lord of the Rings bits for conversions in your models it was just that no photos could be taken of your army for publication. However, models still fell under the majority GW parts rule.

For those thinking the Nazgul would make a great Harpy, but also want to use it in a tournament, just talk it over with the guy who runs your LGS. It's pretty lax where I play, but we had a RT tournament a few months back, and it was super strict. There were guys putting coats of paint on bases left and right before it started, and quite a few models were disqualified after round one.
The important thing is that it's worth it to you. Usability in tournaments is a small thing if you're primarily a hobbyist.
