You should try glueing the 2nd ed lictor together. It's much the same problem, but without a groove to glue the mantis arm into. It was literillay glueing a flat .5 cm by 1 cm box into the flat back part of the lictor. Any time someone even looks at my old lictor it generates enough force to knock both mantis claws off.

But the worst model to put together is the gargoyle, hands down.

Because the wing wraps around the model and is glued to the stomach it takes forever to glue it on properly. The weight of the wing will pry it away from the model if it is not held inplace until the glue is completely dry.

Oh, did I forget to mention that you have to do this twice? Each wing is a seperate piece.

If that's not bad enough the wings come together to make the hole for the flying base. If you missalign the wings or make a mistake glueing them together then you can just throw the base away. And don't try and make the hole bigger, you'll just knock one of the wings off.

I have assembled my zoanthrope and Broodlord and, yes, they were a pain. A lot of the limb sockets didn't even fit and some didn't even have sockets.

BUT, THE hardest model that I've assembled would be the death leaper lictor.

These come with (if I remember correctly) the head, torso, two scything talons, 2 rending claws, 2 legs, and a tail.

The head was easy enough due to the large surface area to glue on to. The two legs weren't too hard either (though it was annoying to get them level to the base, especially with that terrain piece the death leaper comes with - i had to put some sprue shavings under it to level it off). The 2 rending claws weren't that hard either.

HOWEVER, the tail and the s.talons were just plain maddening.

The tail is supposed to be glued on to a section of tail that already comes out of the torso. But the glue area is about the size of the hole in a hole-puncher. Doesn't sound that bad until you realize that the tail is massive compared to the glue area (tail=index finger length). You have to hold the tail PERFECTLY still for at least 3 mins IN THE POSE YOU WANT until the glue dries. Then you gotta be careful as you let go because the superglue might glue your fingers to the tail and you may rip it off again accidentally (happened to me about 3 times for both of my death leapers).

The glue area for the s.talons are just as bad (hole-punch-sized sockets, twice the length of fingers this time) but unlike the tail (which at least had some sort of jutting out shape to help position the tail), the arm socket was just a concave bowl, meaning your s.talons are free to turn and slide. Again, you had to tediously hold the talons in place (you really begin the feel the weight of the talons by this point). Remember how I said you had to be careful not to rip off the piece you just glued on while releasing your fingers? Well, this time your fingers are glued to the rending claws as well! I had to glue these back on so many times. I dropped one of the leapers shortly after admiring the beauty of the model. Had to do it all over again.

Also, there were numerous times when I had to make "battlefield" repairs as the limbs tend to fall off sometimes. So i sealed the limbs with superglue (thats rite, I glued the sockets AND over them so it'll "grasp" the limbs tight).

I must say, however, that the death leapers are one of my favourite models in 40k. I guess you earn whatever you get?

The most annoying model I've ever assembled is Tyrant. Assembling Tyrant is a pain- literally! My fingers hurt when I finished him.

Even Green Stuff doesn't help much

Personally, my LEAST favorite model to assemble was the tyrant. That little SOB hates me.....

My little brother clipped off the little on on the foot that keeps it in the base, and the gaps in the carapace were very large, but not quite large enough to warrant a return. The model is so freakin heavy that when I pinned it with a paperclip and some GS, the pin snapped off! After some dremelling to fix the protruding pin, I finally get most of it together. However, the tail refuses to stay on, and it is awkward to pin. Also, for some reason the VC arms popped out of their sockets. All I can say is I HATE assembling tyrants.

They DO look the best of all nid models tho.....

I'm saving up for a flyrant!

To explain my last post, I have to say one thing. Although I loathe assembling metal models (messy, time-consuming, and I usually end up gluing my fingers together), I also kind of enjoy it too. That doesnt make much sense, but for some reason, I feel more of a want to assemble a metal model than a plastic one. I'm not sure why, but regardless I usually am more likely to do larger conversions and build them more industriously than plastic ones.

Don't ask me to explain this post or the previous one, as I dont undrstand them.

If durability is what's driving you mad, try to get someone to spoon a little baking soda over your freshly glued joints. This will cause super glue (cyanoacrylate) to kick instantly as the powder sucks up the glue, and forms a tough composite that's a little harder than GW's current plastic.

This combination of materials can also be used to fill gaps, and build up surfaces. The resulting composite can de dremeled, filed, sanded, and whittled with a craft knife to make fine details.

Gargoyles for me. I bought a Zoanthrope over the weekend and its the easiest Metal Model I've ever worked with. I've never wanted to stab a model before I got my hands on those Gargoyles.

Seriously, I haven't found a model yet that can't be permanently bonded together with cyanoacrylate glue and baking soda. Here you can see my most recent Zoanthrope conversion WIP, all the white areas are the glue and powder composite with details dremeled in. The joints are pinned with floral wire.

The body is from a third edition Ravener with Genestealer arms, and the upper chest is from the new Zoanthrope. I hollowed out the Zoanthrope's chest, and ground down the Ravener body a bit so it could be glued together.
