Those of you who frequent Warpshadow may have seen, but I figured I will post here as well Its a few days of posting, so this first one will be a bit long.
So as the title suggests, I have been given a Hierophant to build and paint as commission, and it has to be done by Christmas. One kid is going to be SUPER happy when he opens this bad boy up!
I got the model 4 days ago, have have been working diligently in getting the job done. As of tonight I have put 17 hours into the beast! But let me start from the beginning
After spending about 8 hours scraping flash, scrubbing with warm soapy water and pinning the main limbs, I cobbled the Phant together to see what it will eventually look like. Man what an amazing model!
The good ol teacup holding him up seems to be quite necessary at this point, those front legs are WOBBLY! Especially the claws, they bend real easy. After talking with my good friend who I am doing the commission for, we thought that cutting the legs up would be a bad idea. I figured a support rod in the torso to a base would be sufficient.
I slept on it.
The next day I thought about it more, and decided, amidst a bout of bravery, to become.. THE BUTCHER!
Yep, I did it. I took saw to Phant. I gotta say, cutting up a $360 models legs is quite nerve wracking!
But if I was going to build this thing, I might as well do it right. Support rods in the upper front leg, the lower front leg, and two pins in the claws, as the good man Gareth did in his amazing tutorial (thanks mate!). This made the front limbs a LOT stronger. Green stuff to hide the gaps, which weren't too bad, and bobs your uncle! Jobs a good 'un.
I actually came up with a really good way to make sure those reinforcement pins line up nice and easy. I painted 2 lines on each side of the leg, as shown here.
After cutting the leg in half between the lines, I simply scored a line across the cross section of the cut leg, joining up the 4 marks from the lines I painted in an "X" fashion. This pic shows what I mean, you can see the faint score marked X.
The pin hole is then drilled in the center of the x, the same is done to the other side of the leg to be pinned, and there ya go, the leg went back together quite nicely. With both legs made stronger like this, the Phant can now free stand. YAY!
Yeah I pinned the gun arms for that one too. All limbs are double pinned for strength also.
Tonight I spent a few hours working on the many MANY little spikes that go all over the body. Every single one has to be pinned, even the tiny ones, and I tell ya, they are tricky! I lost a couple on the floor, and had to carve one out of a spare bit of resin sprue, good thing it was only a tiny one
34/58 done, just one side of the torso to go. Then its time to glue the legs and greenstuff gaps, and work out what to do with the base. I think I am making pretty good time. I cant wait to get down with the brush on it!
So hope that wasn't too long, now you're all brought up to speed
