I hope you will re-think this Striogi, for the following reasons;
What if some of us do not use modeling sand on the bases, but instead use flock and static grass? Do you put flock into the same category? I cannot flock my bases before I primer them as obviousely primer ruins the flock. So I am going to lose points from you (and others) because I do not use the sand style base? I primer, paint the base a base color, then flock it with 3 colors of flock (grass, dirt, in between) then add static grass? many other styles of basing cannot be done before primering.
Shouldn't we be ignoring the base unless you are "modeling" something on the base? Hmmm, with these factors in mind I think I need to redo my submissions obviousely.
I understand the idea that doing the base adds to the model, but to match the rest of my army, I cannot do the base until after primering. This is purely your own desicion to rate however you want, but the limitations of the contest are therefore costing me "votes". That does not seem right.
Edit:
I'm going to call it a success if they don't fall apart and no two poses are alike....
Please don't misunderstand, I'm not trying to say it's a requirement, I do understand the different requirements between flock and sand. if you really think it's an issue, you can always issue a disclaimer about how you're going to put flock on the base.
however, if you're planning on doing say, a snow or cityscape modeling theme, I'd expect to see at least some effort towards that. even with 48 hgaunts, you could arguably place large bits of stone or other detritus to help keep them balanced.
ULTIMATELY: I really doubt that putting basing material on a model is going to make or break whether someone votes for your entry, but, on the other hand, it might. who knows what goes through the minds of those who vote? in the final estimation, the creative choices are ENTIRELY those of the creator. you want to do flock and not sand, Hey, it's YOUR model. I'm only judging which one -=I=- like better. As long as YOU'RE happy with your model, WHO FREEKING CARES??
**EDIT**
by the way, I suspect the GIGANTIC empty space below my post is because these pics are being automatically resized by the forum software. I would suggest using Photobucket to resize these pics to Message Board size...
you can do this by going to your individual pics,
click the {Edit} function,
click the {Resize} drop down menu
click the {Message Board 640x480} option.
this will automatically resize the pic in their system AND resize it here, too.

a model with no material on the base won't exactly be disqualified, but I'd rate it less highly than one that does have something on the base...

I agree with lowlygaunt. I can understand striogi's stand on this if it were a monsterous creature, as those can always have cool stuff dying at its feet, but since this is purely a building 'competition' and not a 'converting' competition, extras on the base should equal bonus points, not be a requirement. I'm building 48 h-gaunts and i am sure as **&^ not going to worry about putting stuff on their bases at this point...Edit:
