you're all jerks :-P
trust me, that's a compliment.
seriously, you guys have put together the best and closest competition yet. I honestly think this months painting competition is the best we've had. In the end I picked winner for a number of reasons, uniqueness, technical skill, ambition, personalization on the bases, and number of completed models. In the end I picked Vespa, your nids were very well done, I loved the bright yellow but it didn't over power the rest of the model. Yes it caught my attention but it didn't hold my attention if you know what I mean. Also your basing on the nids was very good I've always been a fan of that style of base. Next are your assault on black reach marines. The blue is clean and the highlights really make the models pop. The bases are also very complimentary. All in all the marines were very well done, I'd love to see a whole army done to this standard. Then we have your daemon prince, The purple is just awesome, the armour is superb, and the claws and talons are insane, but I think you dropped the ball on his base, the lava effect could be better. And lastly we have your ork warboss, I've always loved this model, it just looks sooooooo epic, but that's just me. You did a superb job on this mini as a whole, the skin, the cloth, the battle damage, the base, it's all excellent. I especially love how you've incorporated a number of different colours into this model, you didn't stick with a small palette you branched out and used a wide range which in my opinion makes for a much more dynamic and purely epic character. Well done to you sir.
second place I have to say was extremely difficult, but I have to give it to Evan Quinn. First off wow, I can't believe you painted all those gaunts, that in and of itself is truly impressive, props to you. But in a more critically analysis your models are quite good and you've held that standard throughout the entire army which again is impressive. Your colour scheme is bold and very well applied, your colours are clean and crisp, but what lost you first place was your basing, it's boring and uninteresting. Your bases are simple and easy to do, which is probably why you did them in the first place. But I think you quick and easy route to get a finished model and so it makes the army look . . . cheap. The models are really good but you skimped out on the bases and that's a no no. As for the other minis honestly I only play 40k so I don't know their origin my guess would be fantasy but as I said thats just a guess. Anyways these models are . . . wow, very well done. the colours in the robes are clean and the really makes the cloth flow. the highlights are excellent and the magic is superb. Your bases are a lot better than the nids, the top characters base I'm assuming comes with model but never the less you've painted it up very very well and it really adds character to the model. The bottom model you've however gone back to the same basing technique as the nids but your saving grace with this model is his face, it's freaking incredible, I'm super impressed with this magicians face, the skin tones are good and the highlights are even and clean.
Third place was also a difficult position to choose, In the end I chose Sinny!. Your army is, in a word, FANTASTIC. Yellow is an extremely difficult colour scheme to pull off and do well. You sir have pulled it off and have done quite well. Though honestly not the best yellow army I've seen this one was very good. Your models look great on that table and you've managed such a unique army as well. Over all I really really like your army, you've painted up an above average army that's large, imposing and dynamic. The yellow really makes them stand out on the field. As for your basing, I really like your effect, it's simple and yet effective (my favourite) your basing quite effectively unify your army. Oh also I"ll comment on your battle damage and weathering. Your skill here is good but not great, I can personally say this is one area I've always struggled with, so don't take it personally. I like the look and effect but not amazing work. you've done a very good job though.
Fourth was easier to choose, I give this position to Bigpig. I do love a good rust effect and yours is spot on. I also really like your light effects, the green glowsticks are over used when people do custom colours and paint their glowsticks I'm impressed. you have some talent with fading colours. You've done a brilliant job with this blue light it's positively magical. Unfortunately there were two things that brought you to fourth, one your lord. Why? I can understand changing things up or make the lord unique and stand out but the colours you chose. The chest plate and the green on the staff is what threw me, I just don't think it works, props for trying something different but I just don't think it works. The second thing is your bases, unique? yes, effective? No. I'm sorry but the bases just look . . . odd to me, they look unfinished. Again props for trying something different but I just don't think it works.
Fifth I give to Maskedtyranid. Your colour scheme is good but not great. What I really like is your warrior lash whips/bone swords they look really great and the way you've painted them is really quite good. you did an excellent job but I didn't find your models interesting enough.
sixth is atrocity. Sorry eh but someone has to take last place. As for your models I honestly can't tell, the top pic makes them look two tone, shiny and flat, but the bottom pic brings more depth to them. If I had to guess I'd say they were two different armies. So the reason why you're taking sixth isn't based on your painting skill it's based on your pictures, I encourage you to next time take the time to take good pics in good lighting.
anyways those are my thoughts and my analysis of these months entries, well done to all and congrats to whoever takes first :-D
cheers
