How to expertly paint Hive Fleet Kraken

Hi, great post! I was wondering: since I only have GW paints, what are the GW equivalents for the Vallejo paints you used? I am specifically interested in the skin tones since that seems to be the trickiest part in getting a natural blend. Thanks www.stoppable.se/thegreatdevourer/painting_kraken.htmthat's how i painted my very similar kraken scheme, only GW paints

Well when I first got my nids I did not choose the kraken style due to the amount of people at the time painting it that way, but now... I kinda like it. So guess I'll start repainting my 238 figures. Speaking of which, is there anything specific to use on resin models to strip the paint off? Thinking on starting off with my exocrine.

This is one of the best i have ever seen. I'm new to this site, and joined because of this post. I have been practicing the red striping for a couple of hours none stop on older models i don't care about. I'm pretty new to this game, and army. I got all the base coating, and steps you explained down, except the red stripes. For some reason I can't get them anywhere close to as neat as yours. I'm guessing its my brushes. I don't have any fine detail brushes. I was curious if you could give a link where to purchase the brushes you use, and the technique to paint those stripes if possible. Thanks alot Zack

Thanks alot Zack Welcome to the hive. The brushes I use are called Martin F. Weber Kolinsky sable winter harvest. I get them from here: www.kolinskyartbrushes.com/Martin-F.-Weber-Winter-Harvest-Rounds-p-1-c-281.html@zeazer: Take it easy man...this is one of those special threads that most people don't mind being necroed. In fact I'm not sure how these threads got unpinned. This thread attracts a lot of visitors to the hive...and I don't mind people posting in. krakenfiend

Thanks alot for posting those, going to pick a couple of them up. Do you use any sort of tricks while painting the red. the brushes i have now are pretty close to the 1 you linked me "a little bigger" not by much. For some reason all my stripes end up looking like flames. I'v been practing ont he same gaunt now like 20+ times. Hes probably got like 10 pounds of paint on him. i just stripe then chaos black over it. everytime it looks like flames lol. any help on this method would be great if you can. P.S sorry for digging up a old thread I saw it on a search on google, and found this site that way.

No worries man...glad you found it ...as for the brushes....I suggest the 3/0 (definitely) and the 0...maybe a size 2 filbert (maybe not)... Ah yes...the dreaded carapace stripes...heh...well let me dig up a little more help for you: This is a thread that I made a long time ago that has a more detailed look into a lot of the things I put into painting miniatures: thetyranidhive.proboards28.com/index.cgi?board=painting&action=display&thread=1160775900&page=1and this one chronicles my take on painting hivefleet Behemoth: thetyranidhive.proboards28.com/index.cgi?board=painting&action=display&thread=1174089695It uses the same striping technique as the kraken guide...just with different colors....but i use closer pictures...maybe that will help you some....If not let me know and I will help you more. @zeazer: Don't worry man...I'll take the heat if the mods get upset...this is a pretty lax forum here, thats why I come here (because we don't treat people like dirt as they do on Tau Online). I always enjoy reading about people finding this thread and it helping them...it helps me to keep in touch with my fan base... ;D krakenfiend

Awesome thanks alot for the help so far. Wasted about 15 bucks on some (please do not swear) brushes from my local arts/crafts store today. I guess they become dry brushes. I'm for sure going to purchase a few of those nice detail brushes. Thanks again for the quick repsonses. This has already helped my painting techniques by about 100% Lets see when i get thos quality brushes, I'm hoping i wont get flames anymore, but nice stripes. Quick question ont he ink, I was skiming through most of the post, going to read later "to late" You talk about "ink" besides fleshwash, I have that, are you useing like normal black/red pen ink? sorry for the stupid question.

The thread has not been stickied because the article is up on The Tyranid Hive website. There's no need to waste space on the painting forum when it's already there.
Don't worry about asking questions you think are stupid. Every question needs to be asked, stupid or not. If you ask it then you ask it, no big deal.
An ink in painting terms is not something that comes out of a pen. Painting ink is just a thinned down paint. You can get inks from your GW store or just about any store that sells GW stuff.

yeah I keep forgetting that this is on the site already...silly me...
Anyway yoritomo is right...its not the kind of ink that comes from a pen....its a specially formulated ink that is much like highly diluted paint (it just has a stronger pigment concentration). You should be able to find them anywhere that sells GW paints....though you need to hurry if you want GW inks....from what I understand, GW is doing away with their inks....I'm going to try out the P3 or the Vallejo inks maybe.

Hey kraken thanks again for the help, you too yoritomo. I have been looking maybe not hard enough, but I can't seem to find a picture of a genestealer that you have done in this style. I have the new, and old versions of the stealers. They really don't have a carapace, I don't really know how to paint them. Do you have any pics of 1 you have done? This weekend I will be painting my first gaunt, I will post pics for some pointers and some crtique.

hah hah...thats because I've NEVER painted a Genestealer in the kraken scheme....an unfortunate circumstance that I will remedy soon. I have a ton of stealers to paint too....its sad. I'll try to do one soon and post a pic of one......
