What should I get for a good solid starter army?

I'm relatively new to playing warhammer 40k and I was hoping to get a few pointers on what to get for my army. I played a little bit a few years back so I have a very basic grasp of the game.

I've already got a few things.
20 Termigaunts
12 Hormagaunts
10 Gargoyles
14 Genestealers
1 Broodlord
3 Tyranid Warriors
1 Hive Tyrant
1 Tervigon
1 Trygon Prime (I built this the pervious time I played, but still have the bits to change into a mawloc)

Is this a pretty basic start? I'm not looking for anything competitive, just something semi - solid for a start until I understand the rules and mechanics better. Any input is appreciated.

it's a great start. once you're playing against harder lists, you will definitely want a 2nd (and probably 3rd) flyrant but these things can wait.

Like Gigasnail said: more Flyrants. Otherwise I would advice getting 2 or 3 Carnifexes as the next step. And more termagants if you're gonna use that Tervigon much. Welcome to the glorious feast that is the Hive btw :-)

Thanks guys, I had looked over that post when I first saw this forum a few weeks back when I was looking for tips for Tyranids on Google. I've been lurking for a bit, over thinking things a bit too much, and just decided to dive in head first. The closest group to me is about an hour away, so I figured it would be more beneficial to ask ya'll when I'm not already there.
I figured I'd need more flyrants, I was just wanting to experiment a little with what we have as an army. A Carnifex or two was the next thing I wanted to get. Once again, I appreciate the feedback.

Should I convert my Trygon to a Mawloc, or should I leave it as is? I have mixed thoughts on both, and I'm unsure which is really better.

Mawloc might do something. Tryhard probably won't ever. Saves some points too for the same durability.

Model it however you want. No one is going to care, and no one but another nid player will even notice.

Keep in mind too that we are supposedly going to receive a new codex in the next few months to come too. Not saying you shouldn't buy a ton of stuff right off, but just consider that things could swing a bit for us.

Also I'd advise investing in a venomthrope or two. They will make life so much easier for you.

Good to know they may be doing that. Half of my army is still in pieces so I probably won't get much else until I at least have them built. I'll keep the venomthropes in mind, thanks.

Yep Venomthropes are great. If you buy them, they come in box of three and you only really need 2. So i advise making one a zoanthrope.

What to get? Lots of magnets! I magnetise all MC arms/heads/wings... Even gargoyle bases. Takes some time but you'll love it. I started with 5x1 and 3x1 round magnets. Recently added some 2x1 for those gargs.
