Since everyone seems to be doing these "How To Fix" threads i figured I would start my own. This one as you probably already know is about the whole codex.
I think the main reason that the swarm lord isn't used that much is because it costs to much. By making it 230 points it would be a more viable option to run. Another idea to make the swarm lord would be to give it the option of wings. Now that we got the swarm lord out of the way we can start talking about the other tyranid stuff.
Get rid of instinctive behaviors altogether or increase the synapse range to 18 inches or so. This most likely won't happen, but us tyranid players can dream.
Option of giving TLDs to other MCs like the Harpy or tyrgon.
Make the rupture cannon on the tyrannofex strength D.
Reduce the cost of Genestealers to 8 points a model.
Be able to deep strike Spore mines during deployment
Give tyranid prime the option for wings.
Make the venomthrope jump infantry since it is supposed to float.

I think tyranids need to step into 7th edition:
- Epic scale - we need to be able to fight with larger fleets, so we need overall model cost reduction, especially for warriors, monstrous creatures, biomorph upgrades and so. Also some Gargantuan Creatures, D weapons and higher Toughness/Strengh. - New detachments - decurion with useful command benefits, warlord traits and formation special rules. - Psychic powers - this factor is very important in 7th edition. We need either access to BRB disciplines or have our own disciplines, that allows us to compete with SM/Eldars/Chaos. I am looking at new shadow in the warp rule that could cool down some psychic armies. - Army special rules - maybe something additional for synapse, like adamantium will and fearless, IB tables minor change: I would keep them as they are just '1' is cannibalistic hunger, go to ground, fall back, 2-5 is seek cover shoot/assault closest enemy, 6 is as previous but with rage, preferred enemy, stealth. - New models - I wish for shrieks and sky slashers. Also new biovores, pyrovores, lictors with deathleaper.
That is all I can think right now.

Higher toughness is a good idea because most of our guys are vulnerable to instant death.

the current nid codex is somewhat kinda solid, but still suffers from internal balance. FOr example, why take a crone when two dakkkafae can do the anti air role beter, while being good against ground and assault. This is a poor example because hive crones are pretty good. We just need someone who isn't cruddance and understands how to balance a codex within itself. I personally wouldn't mind being weaker as an army if it meant that most of my options are worth taking.
I had a fix for the swarmlord, but i'm not going ot post it until I work out some kinks.
oh, and another thing I would like is weapons other than TLD being viable. i like them as much as the next guy, but seriously, this is kind of stupid, especially with "put them on harpies" being a major point. if venom cannons and all that other (please do not swear) were better, then that would mean that the tyranid codex wouldn't be called "codex:devourers'

- Synapse gives fearless and adamantium will. - IB bad on 1-2 normal on 3-4 good on 5-6 - Shadow in the warp makes enemy psikers in range need an additional warp charge to success - Synapse creatures get a 5++invulnerable warp field - Synapse and psykers get 4++ warp field - warriors T5 - tyrant guard 3W - wings biomorph uses weapon slot - regen 20 points - acid blood 10 points - hardened caparace +1 armor and iwnd 25 points - harpy can use tldwblw - swarmlord has a 3++ warp field - shock cannon range 36 - impaler cannon assault3 AP3 - Tfex BS4 - Prime more cheap - Tail biomorphs benefit from stomp

How about putting the Swarmlord into the Lord of War category

Honestly I think Tyler summed this up pretty well in another thread.
T6 on all Infantry, T9 on MCs with an optional upgrade to T10. 18" move, run and charge, for anything with scytals, and fliers able to assault from swooping. S:D on TL Devourers 2+ on warriors, 3+ on all non-MCs, 2++ on all MCs. Shadows in the Warp makes psykers immediately die Points reduction of 50-75% for everything. Battle brothers with everyone. To represent using biomass, for every wound or hullpoint we cause we either get a wound on anything we want, or bring a model back to life with 1 wound. Extend range on all weapons by 18"
This might make us semi-competitive.

honestly, I would like to see the SwarmLord turned into an upgrade for a hive tyrant, which gives it bonuses without altering its gear. maybe give the base tyrant access to a few other pieces of unique wargear if it becomes a SwarmLord. I just envision it as a special tyrant, but it should still be able to inhabit any base tyrant form. as for the bonuses, an extra mastery level, and turn blessings and witchfires into nova powers at their given ranges. anyone else think this area of design space is worth further exploration.

Instead of trying to fix each and every unit in our codex or codexs. How about changing the core rule book. Take out LoW and D weapons and put them in apocalypse, limit the use of flyers per army to three models. Problem solved. Cause let's face it when it comes D weapons it won't matter how tough or what type of save it your models have.

Point cost corrections for the Prime and Tervigon, and a random smattering of BS4 passed out would do wonders. Really, for creatures entirely "bred" for combat, whose sole purpose is engaging all things not tyranid, our standard WS/BS is crummy.

It should be at least 4.

I think that boost alone would justify many of the points and set us straight for a generic one-change-to-fix-them-all type deal. We can dream.

At this point in the meta, Instinctive Behaviour is basically Necrons old 'Phase Out'. It's way too punishing and needs to go.
